I don’t know what has changed since last year’s poor reviews, but it is all for the better. I shopped late on Black Friday, when you might find the staff tired and irritable. But I found the sales people very helpful, even gladly finding that some Mountain Khaki shorts were on sale even though not marked. The store did not have some pants in my size and helped me order them, online and getting the sale price with free shipping. While I was at the counter completing my online order, Christian Chambers, I think the manager, was multitasking to the highest degree. She was answering questions from both staff and customers while checking out customers at the cash register. During all this she and the other staff always were cherry and professional. I left the store in a great mood. I will give Kinnucan’s a well deserved five stars!

Selection is ok, but customer service sucks. It seems to be the same at all of Kinnucan’s stores in the South, have been to the locations at Avalon, Auburn AL, Montgomery(East Chase) and this one in Atlantic Station, but it’s the same, service sucks. And at all 4 locations it’s basically find it yourself type of deal, you ask a question and they all seemed annoyed you are in there, ummm hello, it’s people like me that pays your wages… either way, will not and can not shop at Kinnucan’s store, they might think they don’t need a certain demographic of shoppers, but it seems to me every Kinnucan store I have been in, they could use every penny… Also I find it funny as heck that one of Kinnucan best selling brand, Southern Marsh, prides itself on Southern Heritage, yet all of the clothing is Made in China, ummm hello???

Since Kinnucan’s opened a bit earlier this year, I’ve been a few times just to browse and also to pick up a few things I had on my mind. I wasn’t familiar with the brand at all, nor the pronunciation, but what we have here in Atlantic Station is a pretty decent outfitter. Now, I will preface this by saying you’re probably not in the best position to prepare for your next extreme backpacking trip or anything and that’s just fine. Many of the brands they carry tend to be the more pedestrian items from each — light rain jackets, apparel, stylish items, sunglasses, more fashionable footwear, etc. I’ve been in on a few occasions to pick up some shirts, a hat or two, and a few smaller items. Each time has been a fairly easy shopping trip. Though, I’m not much of a shopper, so it becomes more of a «mission» than an «experience.» Some of the brands they carry — Yeti coolers Patagonia Chaco ENO The North Face and so on Service is super friendly and their selection is good for what it is. Glad to see that there is a spot in Atlantic Station selling some brands most seem to like.

When I first walked into this store my excitement was overwhelming, I was convinced that I had just found a new favorite. The first thing I saw was one of my favorite shirt companies, Lauren James. And then I saw a shirt that I’ve been trying to order online for a while but has been out of stock, so this place seemed like a win to me. It was like a little slice of happiness. But that happiness was short lived. While browsing with my roommate through all the clothes and looking for a pair of Tevas, it became glaringly obvious that the people who worked there were more invested in following us around, as if we were going to shoplift, but not offering to help. It’s needs to be noted that neither of us had a bag — we were carrying our wallets and cellphones in-hand. And while we were both dressed for a lazy day, myself in an oversized tee and running shorts and her in a crop top and leggings, we are both mid-twenties and southern, seemingly their target market. We left the store with our purchases not sure if we’d return because nothing ruins a great Saturday of sun and shopping like the sour taste of bad customer service.

Kinnucan’s Specialty Outfitter(«KSO») opened in Atlantic Station on May 10, 2014. Kinnucan’s is based out of Auburn, Alabama and has about a dozen stores in the Southeast. This is the first Atlanta area location for the company. A second location is opening at the Avalon development in Alpharetta in October 2014. Kinnucan’s took over the old City Sports space, next to the Regal movie theater and across from Café Nineteen. The store is new, big, and looks(and smells) great. Walking inside, I was immediately reminded of outdoors stores such as REI and Half Moon Outfitters. The setup is impressive. The place looks polished and organized. When I visited recently, they had the Braves game playing on their multitude of flatscreen displays and the audio coming through clearly over the store’s sound system. It almost felt like being at the game. The store carries major brands such as Patagonia, The North Face, Columbia, Marmot, Mountain Hardware, Maui Jim, and Ray Ban. The selection of outerwear and camping gear isn’t as big as REI due to the difference in store size, but the inventory is still respectable. It’s worth noting this is one of the only(the only?) place in Midtown where you can find most of these brands/items all in one place. Kinnucan’s actually started out as a shoe store. They carry a wide array of active/adventure and casual footwear including sandals and flip flops by Chaco, Rainbow, and Hari Mari. I like Rainbows and was pleasantly surprised to see their collection which includes the sandal version with extra-thick soles — these aren’t carried at every Rainbow retailer. The store is very Southern and the company’s Southern roots are evident in the regional brands carried such as Southern Marsh, Southern Shirt Company, and The Southern Gentleman. Aside from outerwear, footwear, and camping gear, there are also yard games(e.g. Tiki Toss), kayaks, hammocks, frisbees, sunglasses, and more. The kids’ section has some neat stuff such as Kinetic Sand, which is fun to play with. Kinnucan’s has a history of supporting colleges. I didn’t see any Georgia Tech merchandise, so it would be nice if they added some Tech gear and supported the local school nine blocks south. Like REI, Kinnucan’s has a membership program(«Family Benefits Program»). For $ 10 a year, you can earn points on purchases which result in discounts on future purchases. The membership isn’t a no-brainer like REI’s program($ 20 for a lifetime membership + annual dividends), but at least the option is there to reward those who purchase a lot from Kinnucan’s. Parking in the Atlantic Station parking garage is free for the first two hours.
