I am a newby at roller derby and Carly was great at helping me get my gear together. Very helpful and personable. Small wrinkle, upon arriving home, realized the helmet I purchased was too big. Some emails with Carly and Cherri got things ironed out, they are shipping another helmet to me to be delivered by tomorrow afternoon. That is first class customer service and I will only go to Powerhouse Skates for all of my skating needs. Thank you Cherri and Carly for your patience and assistance as we got things straightened out.

They have really friendly service and you can tell they know their stuff. I got lost but the store is right around the corner from Pure Taqueria Mexican restaurant on North Highland. There’s no lot so it’s best to park on North Highland and walk. The store is a clean, organized space in a trendy part of town. The owner educated me and was patient in letting me try on different pairs of skates. She helped me find the proper ‘dance’ skates in about fifteen minutes. Although my size wasn’t in stock, she ordered them and I can pick them up within one day. I highly recommend and I’ll be back!

If you want top skating advice and expertise in roller derby, don’t buy anywhere else. I’ve been skating for 5 years and before Powerhouse Skates came to town I made a lot of mistakes with shopping for gear and skates. We are so lucky to have this kind of help and personable advice locally… you cant shop for skates or gear online without wasting time and money. Wild Cherri and her staff take the time to help you find exactly what you need and they always price things fairly. They truly care about the skating community in the Southeast and it shows. (Also, pretty funny that the only 1 star review endorses another skate shop… hmm I wonder if it’s the owner of said skate shop :))

The most knowledgeable in the business! Derby gear, tons of skates, even in-line skates for the Beltline, apparel, you name it. I even saw them mount a plate and wheels on a Gucci boot for a rhythm skater, but obviously that wasn’t for me haha! This shop is awesome. They even have derby on TV on weekends so you can just hang out and watch. Oh now they even have longboards if that’s your thing. Fun shop, great people, it’s the best.

SAVEHUNDREDSANDGETBETTERSERVICETOBOOT… I’ve been around various disciplines of skating for almost 40-years. Currently, I am teaching some Georgia roller-derby skaters to build more advanced skills. Today, I had a chance to look at a mount put together by Powerhouse skates– The skater, knowing my background, asked me about my opinion as she wasn’t sure it looked right. You see, while in high-school, I spent significant amounts of time in pro-shops for both quad-skates(as those are what we trained-on for summer-hockey until the early 1980’s), and ice-hockey skates. During college-play, I spent significant amounts of time around highly-trained equipment managers. Personally, I’ve never mounted a plate to a boot, but I well know what it should look like. This skater –who’s only about 6-months into the sport– had accurately assessed that her plate was completely mis-aligned. «How???» you might ask. Near the mid-point of the plate in question(the right skate which is pictured left) you can notice about a ½″ variance from the other plate. It actually hangs out past the arch portion of the out-sole by about an 1⁄8 of an inch. The other skate appeared to be misaligned as well, but was much closer to correct. The only other experience I’ve had with Powerhouse Skates(sales/service) was when another girl I’m teaching also showed-up with a brand-new, $ 1000 package(from this Atlanta shop) complete with a stripped king-pin/micro adjustment nut combination. There’s a funny end to this review… When I first came to the area, before Powerhouse had opened, I called around in order to assess reputable shops. After«talking-shop» with Jim at East Coast Rollersports in Winder, Georgia, I believed that he was an expert at skate-servicing. After having my skate-boots re-plated, and having him rebuild a pair of my wife’s ice-hockey skates into quad-skates(which would not have been possible if he hadn’t built a custom heel for them), I was able to verify his expertise. For this reason, I’ve referred all skaters I’ve been involved with since meeting Jim(who’s been at it for about 30-years) to his shop in Winder. These two didn’t happen to listen, for whatever reason. When I verified that skater’s mis-mount –by the way– she said, «That sucks, I spent over $ 1000…» One of my other skaters –who purchased her package from East Coast– said, «I spent $ 600…» For this $ 600, she had the exact same model/color Antik boot on a higher-end platform(plate, bearings, and wheels). I might shop at Powerhouse if they were having a 75% off sale, but I would bring the package out in pieces, drive a half-hour, and have them put-together at East Coast Rollersports.

I am brand new to the world of Derby and decided to hit Powerhouse Skates for help. Deathskull and Wild Cherri were insanely helpful with trying on gear and ensuring proper fit for each item. I really appreciated the time that they took I listen to my concerns and to teach me about proper fit for the items that are going to be saving my rump!
