Second Self Beer Company

First off with the beers — I am impressed how a relatively new brewery makes such consistently good quality beers. Oh and they have these fun beer samplers with interesting glasses and catchy names.
I also like their open space style, so it feels like a lounge that is open spaced and free flowing. I like it in that it is clean and has lots of breathing room.
The only reason why, they don’t get five stars because they really need to partner with a food location (even a pizza place would be good!!) so you can have beer and food.
There is also lots of potential for the venue to be utilized as a wedding reception area.

I don’t see the hype in this place. Upon arrival it had a front door that wasn’t the real front door. We walked around to the side and the entrance was right where the truck delivery entrance would be. There was only like 5 or 6 cars in the parking lot. Upon walking in it had this very strong odd odor that never went away. I used the restrooms and they didn’t have a lock that worked on the door. Also, the restrooms had that odd smell as well. It was $ 12 for one tasting and the glasses weren’t decorated with their logo or anything, just regular beer glass. They had 6 tokens and 6 beers. All the beers were very enjoyable with the exception of the ginger beer. It was pretty terrible and tasted kind of like the beer had actually gone bad. They had a good IPA and malty flavored beer depending on what you like. They did only have 6 beers when I went so the options are limited if you only like a certain type of beer. This place is what I consider «up and coming.» It’s worth a try, but don’t look for anything fancy. They had plenty of seating. Our table was very lopsided and should probably be fixed ASAP. The workers were kind and informative. Would I go back? Probably not.

It’s pretty reasonable. The beer is decent, though the glass they provide is rather small and lacks the reusability that others provide. If these draconian Georgia laws exist, at least give us nicer glasses.
I’m still looking for the beers to match Russian river valley and other great California breweries. The search continues.

I have tasted (well, more than tasted) the Thai Wheat and the Rye. Loved both of them. Even though I’m not that much of a hops person, the rye was very enjoyable. But the star for me was that wheat. I love a wheat beer anyway, but the subtle thai spices in this one make it very interesting. Can’t wait to enjoy more.

This is my second review of Second Self because my first review was removed. I visited Second Self in Dec 2014 with a group of friends. In my opinion the beer is not good. I love going to breweries on the weekend, it’s one of my favorite activities. I recently went to Eventide for my bday, I’ve been to Sweetwater more times than I should admit and I’ve also visited Red Hare, Red Brick, Orpheus, Three Taverns and Wild Heaven. The beer at Second Self is not even in the same range as these other breweries. Again, this is just my opinion and hopefully the owners aren’t offended and don’t ask Unilocal to remove my review for a second time. I hope that the beer improves; I think it’s great there is so much beer coming out of ATL.

Again, I love breweries as activities. This one is no exception. I am tempted to give them four stars because the place was SWELTERING in July as they have no AC since the tasting room is in the warehouse, but I guess it makes sense and I had a great time otherwise so I won’t.
Small newish little brewery near Monday Night with a lot of tasty beers! I tried them all. I had never had a Gose before but loved it. Thai Wheat is also good of course. There was one called Christmas in July that I didn’t love, but some other people liked it. The great thing is that the flavors are not at all boring and there’s something for everyone (who likes beer.) They only can and sell two of the flavors so going is definitely worth it to taste something new.
Go! But maybe go more in the fall when it’s not so hot. But also don’t everyone go because I also liked that it wasn’t super crowded like some other breweries…

A friendly place with delicious beer and unique favors. Staff is knowledgable, and welcoming, Donna always has a big smile. Plenty of parking. I recommend the Thai Wheat, very tasty and has been a go-​to gift I give to satisfy my beer connoisseur (aka craft beer addict) friends.

After hearing about Second Self through a slew of friends with discernible taste, I hosted my birthday party there with about 30 guests. The overall experience was great! I brought in my own food (way better than having to use vendors event spaces or breweries have «deals» with), had a photo booth (plenty of space for whatever you might need), and the beer was fantastic (I could write love songs about their JunIPA). The staff was super helpful and even though I was one of their first private events, they were very professional and welcoming to me and my guests. Even though they’re fairly new in the Atlanta beer scene, it’s easy to see that we ain’t seen nothing yet.
Looking forward to more events and fun times at Second Self in the future!

I had my birthday party at Second Self last night and it was the BEST BIRTHDAY EVER! I worked very closely with co-​owner Jason and event manager Donna because I rented a karaōke machine to bring to the party. They made sure I had everything I needed and even provided a spotlight so my party guests felt like rock stars on stage! I would absolutely recommend it for anyone looking to have a unique private event. Plenty of free parking, which is a huge plus in Atlanta.
Now onto the beer. Their two flagships Red Hop Rye and Thai Wheat are awesome. I don’t like hoppy beers normally but the balance in the Red Hop is perfect. And the Thai Wheat is such a unique blend of flavors, they really make you feel like you have an experienced palette when you can actually TASTE the lemongrass and the ginger. Other favorites of mine are the bold and spicy Mole Porter, and the tart and refreshing Gose.
If you’re looking for a friendly spot to enjoy some great beers, then Second Self Beer Company is the place for you!

I usually have a great time at second self but on June 3^rd I went there and charged 20 $ a piece for the worst BBq that consisted of pork fat instead of pulled pork, a regular tour and beer. Usually you get a glass as well. The thing that pissed me off the most was that they didn’t give me a glass so the law is really screwing consumers over by charging 12 $ for just a tour and 3 12oz beers and let’s be honest after one tour you have seen them all. I feel like I was ripped off and I love the Thai wheat but I will not be supporting second self since this horrible experience

I recently went to one of the comedy nights at Second Self. They seem to be kinda popular at area breweries and I had seen some of the performers before. It was my first trip to Second Self, though I had seen their campaign to build the tasting room online before they officially opened.
It’s clear that the brewery is still new. It’s just not built up yet, but that’s okay because they are making some KILLER brews. Being new and smaller than some of the other Atlanta breweries doesn’t stop them from being hospitable. Donna is super friendly, and always makes sure you are having a good time. The owner, Jason, is happy to answer any questions you have about their beer or craft brewing in general.
My favorite is the Thai Wheat, enough so that I keep buying it at Ale Yeah to make sure it’s available at home. It is, in my opinion, one of the truly perfect summer beers available. I’m from Wisconsin and can’t always drink my beloved New Glarus (other craft brew enthusiasts know they only sell in WI). Second Self is putting out beers that are not only a great substitution when I’m missing those, but perhaps a replacement altogether. I tried their Mole Porter on tap last fall and loved that, as well.
In short, I’m looking forward to seeing this brewery grow. Great beer, friendly and knowledgeable people. Personally, it was one of the better local brewery experiences I’ve had. The last brewery I went to had me waiting over 15 minutes to get a sample, and only 20 people were in the room, and then the server couldn’t answer my basic question (flavor profile) about what I was drinking. It’s not like that at Second Self.

Was recently there for a private event. The owner had promised the host extra time for set up. When we arrived for set up, the owner spoke very rudely to the host and would not allow the set up as promised.
It was a 90 plus degree day and the air conditioning was broken. The owner did not explain that the air was broken, did not apologize for the broken air, and did not compensate the host for the sweltering conditions of the facility.
The bartender was very pleasant and helpful. However, the owner needs to work on his interpersonal skills and customer service skills.

This brewery is a great addition to the West side! They had delicious beer and a comfortable laid back atmosphere. I normally order the Thai Wheat when I see it in restaurants so it was fun to drink it right in the brewery! I’m looking forward to seeing this brewery grow!

I forgot to post my review BUT I could not slight this experience by not giving it a 5 star rating… Atmosphere is so awesome and welcoming feels like everyone in the room are all close friends. Great times and now always look for the beer when I am out and about.

Fun place to hang out with beer fans! $ 12 for 6 tokens, which will get you 4 – 5 six ounce beer tastings and a commemorative glass. I enjoyed most of the beer flavors and the staff was amicable. A nice pre-​dinner event; I think tasting closes at 7:30.

This brewery has only been open since Oct 2014. $ 12 for 6 tastings in the sample glass you get to take home. We went on Valentines Day and got to try a Red Velvet cake infused beer. YUM! They will have other seasonal and specialty beers throughout the year to try. This is a smaller place then most breweries in the area. Free parking. Definitely worth checking out again!

Bare bones brewery, but good beers. $ 12 a person inside a warehouse, no activities (ie cornhole or outside fare). You just stand, sit and drink. At first when you come in, the smell of the hops is overwhelming, like a pet store smell since the tasting room and brewery are not separated. Short lines for samples, 6 oz beer pours, and no activities… we were out of there within an hour.

I’ve been to many breweries in Atlanta and this one was a new one for me. It was pretty good! For $ 12 you get a cute glass with 6 tokens for 6 beer samples. We went on Valentine’s Day so they had a beer infused with Red Velvet cake! I loved the taste and the idea of putting red velvet cake into a beer. Very original! This company certainly thinks outside the box. It was definitely smaller than the other local breweries I’ve been to here in the city. There was lots of free parking right next to the building.
We went on the «tour» of the brewery and the person hosting it was extremely knowledgeable about the brewing process. At the very end of the 2 hour brewery session, the staff gave out Valentine’s Day red velvet and white chocolate cupcakes! I thought that was a very nice gesture. I enjoyed this brewery and would recommend it.
Here’s a fact fun: If you bring you glasses back to reuse, you get $ 2 your next brewery tasting!

Fun place to start our weekend! Scoutmob had a special for $ 15 each that included six short pours, a key chain, logo sticker and T-​shirt, so we went for that instead of the regular six pours with small glass regular offer for $ 12. Beers were delicious and varied. Neither of us like darker porter type beers so we did not try those, but the lighter wheat was fruity and a hit with both of us, and I particularly liked the red as while. Nice clean indoor space with lots of seating and a good crowd on a Friday afternoon. Fun visit!

Second Self is new to the Atlanta brewery scene. There was a Scoutmob deal for a tasting and some swag ($ 15), so we checked it out.
The brewery itself is pretty no-​frills. You enter through a warehouse door next to what looks like a loading dock. It’s open concept, so you can see the brew tanks right next to the tasting area. It’s not the coziest place to hang out, but they’re new and it’s a hard place to work with.
I liked the beer a lot! The Thai Wheat had an interesting (but not really Thai, IMHO) flavor, and they had a special extra-​chili version of the Mole Porter on tap too.
Like all Atlanta breweries, you purchase a tasting glass to get samples. At Second Self, you get 6 tokens (which are a random assortment of coins– so awesome) and they do full pours.
I think Second Self will be fun to watch over the next few years! Beer on!
