Sloppy Floyd Cafeteria

Only in Georgia do we have a governor named Sonny and a state office building named Sloppy.
The cafeteria at the James «Sloppy» Floyd building is a set of stations: burgers at one, salad at another, fried chicken, deli sandwiches — pretty standard cafeteria fare. I’ve had some meals there that were actually pretty darn good, in fact. I am a big fan of the pasta station and of the days when the fried chicken counter has fried okra and green beans. I haven’t had «Ms. Lois’ Fried Chicken,» but Ms. Lois seems to be quite popular with the other folks in the check-​out line.
The grill is problematic — these people would never survive a late Saturday night at the Waffle House. I’m talking these people are MAJORLY on government time. Today, I ordered a grilled cheese on wheat with tomato, and it took at least 15 minutes to make it. The grill simply was not hot enough. I don’t get it. It’s grilled cheese, how hard is that? It also wasn’t very good. I don’t really understand the impact of culinary artistry on sleazy cheese melted on bread with a couple slices of tomato, but it was seriously lacking today. In past trips, I’ve also been told that they don’t really have any of the stuff to make the fancy sandwiches listed on their big fancy menu sign. People seem to like the chicken fingers, though.
All in all, I try to avoid eating in this cafeteria, mostly because I’m never exactly sure how much they’re going to charge me. The cashiers look at calculating your tab more as an art than a science, let’s say. Once, I went on two days the same week and ordered exactly the same thing: all the veggies at the pasta bar sauteed with marinara sauce and a little parmesan (i.e. sans pasta). One day this meal cost me $ 5.50, the other it cost me $ 2. Strange.
It’s unfortunate that the cafeteria is such a gamble because, as another Unilocaler has pointed out, getting lunch out near the Capitol building downtown is not an endeavor for the faint of heart. Next week I think I’ll pack PB & J instead.
