I have no beef with Travis & Company itself but I do with their business partner, Tom Robinson Modern. I purchased two mid-century arm chairs from Tom via 1stdibs where he described the chairs as restored but in excellent condition. When I got the chairs they were a bit wobbly. That in itself did not bother me — vintage chairs often need to be tightened. Once I got the chairs to my restorer, an excellent and honest craftsman, he explained that the chairs were previously shattered and were put together in a horrendous manner — just to make them look sellable but dangerous to sit on. Epoxy was used instead of proper glues, wrong dowels, and wrong kinds of wood — etc. He explained to me that it would have been a lot easier for him(and less expensive for me) if the chairs were sent to him in their shattered condition — without the fake repairs. It cost me over $ 1,400 to restore the chairs to safe condition! My architect, a woman with decades of experience and impeccable reputation, contacted Tom Robinson in a professional manner to ask him to share in these un-expected expenses. Not only did he refuse to take any responsibility, he dared to accuse my architect and me of concocting an elaborate lie to extract money from him. A horrendous person and businessman — stay away from him, please.
