Meadows At Shannondell

I thought I was putting my Mother in the best facility for rehab… was I wrong. They are severely understaffed. Many of the aides/​nurses were not very nice to her when I was not around. Everything may look nice, but don’t be fooled. I stayed for dinner with her last week and the food was terrible. There are many other better facilities in the area.

Don’t be fooled by the nice looks of the facility. They are no different than any run of the mill facility. Nursing staffing is always short staffed; social worker Tanya Miller is worthless in terms of complex discharge planning. Discharge planning should begin on day of admission but in this facility it’s an afterthought that occurred so late in the process that effective planning can not possibly occur. When the facility realized that Mom had no money and could not possible afford a placement at Shannondell things like team meetings stopped. Discharge date was revealed only 6 days ahead. While they like to say they are only required to give (by Medicare regulations) 24 hours notice. They hide behind «the regulations» only when in their favor. y seem to forget that Medicare also requires that the discharge plan be a safe plan. When this was brought up to the administrator he angrily stated «don’t talk to me about Medicare regulations. I can call a cab and send her home. He further went on to say «it only takes an hour or less to arrange for home care». «I don’t understand anything your saying about the PA Waiver». This Administrator frankly was not familiar with the complexities of Moms case and his comment about home care was contrary to the stated discharge need for 24 hour supervision. The administrator of the Meadows at Shannondell would put Mom out on the street with no services just so the bed could produce more cash. Don’t be fooled — Shannondell could care less about your loved one — this is a cash producing production line. Mom saw the psychologist there who recommended that she take a certain medication. The nursing staff blindly accepted his recommendation and we’re going to begin the administration if this medication. I questioned the nursing staff about why a psychologist is prescribing medication and why they would accept medication orders from a non physician. «Oh no he’s a psychiatrist» they said. Trust me he’s a Ph.D. psychologist. When last I looked it’s illegal for a psychologist to prescribe meds. When I questioned the nursing staff why the medication known to have poor outcomes with elderly clients would be administered, they could not answer. Had to have the physician call me to discuss why a known «geriatric unfriendly» med was prescribed she discontinued that medication. Who is watching over psych meds at the Meadows at Shannondell a Ph.D. Psychologist or a physician? Surely the physician just blindly signed without paying much attention to the specifics. Appointments with outside physicians were missed and the staff of Shannondell suggested to the outside physician that it was the families fault. Meanwhile the family was sitting in the waiting room of the outside physician. Don’t be fooled you are going to be very disappointed with the Shannondell at the Meadows. Its nothing more than lipstick in a pig. May look nice but looks only go so far.

Shannondell nursing consistently operates with less staff than legally mandated. Upper management are aware, but do nothing, because the almighty dollar is king. Thinking about placing your loved one there? If you really love them, think again.
What kind of a medical facility does not teach their employees CPR? SHANNONDELL.

Mother was moved here following 4 weeks of rehab at Bryn Mawr Rehab after having a stroke six weeks ago.
What a contrast between the two facilities!
Walking in to this place, there was evident lack of protocol. When my mother was checked in, no one came to speak to us for quite some time. When the nurse appeared, she acted over-​stressed and defensive when we asked questions.
My sister is a nurse and said the ratio of twenty patients to one nurse is not comforting. Also, a nurse left a dosage of pills for my mother to take but did not stay to see if she took them, which is something nurses are trained not to do. My mother also had swollen ankles and no one on the floor noticed this.
My mother was in the rehab section of The Meadows for three and a half days without being visited by a doctor yet for an examination.
This is definitely a big step down from Bryn Mawr Rehab. There’s a funny vibe at The Meadows you pick up on right away after you arrive,

After believing we were placing our mother in the nicest of facilities, we found out otherwise. Although the building is new and beautiful the nursing staff, administrative staff, food staff all leave a lot to be desired. Our mother was left screaming for 2.5 hours one early morning. When I arrived the night nurse said «she had a horrible night– she was screaming all night». After walking into her room, she was wishing she would die, she could not breathe (which was what she was screaming for), and was in rapid Atril Fib. We dialed 911 and got her out of there by ambulance. Lucky for us there were no beds left there when she needed to return. After moving her to another facility we learned what a difference a place makes. When making a decision for a loved one, it is difficult to know what to expect. I can now tell you. EXPECT MORE! Shannondell was a nightmare. They regularly leave the elderly sitting in the hallways. The nursing staff and aides always are on a marathon to get in and get out. Our experience at her new facility — now makes us believe that that is not what you should expect. Shannondell did not treat their patients with dignity, they believed in finding more drugs to keep a patient sedated. PLEASE — if you are going to make this decision, do so carefully. My mother would be dead if I did not walk in and take control of the situation.
