Had an hour layover on my way to a sporting event. So I decided to try some local fare in Augusta. I was in the mood for some BBQ and this was the first place that I saw. While the ambience and decoration wasn’t all that impressive I didn’t stop here for the looks, I stopped here to eat. I was greeted by very nice waitress who was friendly and accommodating. She took the time to explain how their meals were served and what they come with. I ordered the two meat dinner with ribs and brisket, french fries and potato salad. 5⁄6 minutes later my food was brought to me and it was time to eat. Digging into the ribs and brisket which had a subtle but flavorful hickory smoke. Both meats were tender and had great bite to them. Sauce choices were mild which was on the sweeter side with a definite vinegar note. The hot version definitely had a kick to it. The Carolina mustard based version was exactly what you’d expect from that regional based version. I must say all 3 we’re very good. The potato salad was ok but that’s a personal preference as I prefer my potato salad to be a little sweeter and less mustard but every place does it a little different. As I finished my meal and the waitress brought my ticket we chit chatted another 10 minutes about the food and the reason I was in town and had a very enjoyable conversation. I left with the impression of having a good meal and top quality customer service which I really appreciate. I’m only in the area once a year so I’m sure I’ll be back to patronize this business the next time I’m in town.

Not to be confused with the former name of one of the best barbecue restaurants in Kansas City, Oklahoma Boy’s barbecue is pretty well represented by the sun-damaged signage that has turned their happy pig character a concerning black color: they’re not afraid to take their meat to the darkest caramelization of their sugars in their rub. It can be a little off-putting if you get an entire mouthful of the bark, but on the plus side it means that the lean brisket is cooked long enough to be rendered pretty decently. Combined with a well-balanced sauce that’s walks the line between vinegar and tomato better than the stereotypical KC sauce, and you get a rustic kind of barbecue that’s as charming as the people who serve it to you.
