Ace Custom Tailors

This is my first Unilocal review and I think I’ve been saving it for a situation like this. I had a suit tailored here for a wedding and I thought the store was open until 6 on Saturday. Much to my dismay, as I pulled up at 2:20 I quickly realized my error. They were closed on Sunday, the day of the wedding. It was a desperate shot but I immediately called another location and they were able to get in contact with the Far West manager Mireya. Mireya decided to drive all the way from south Austin to help me open the store so I could get the suit. I am an irresponsible asshole and I didn’t deserve the above and beyond customer service of Ace Custom Tailors but I am humbled. Thank you ACT!

Dishonest place of business. Dropped off two items, the first item was not ready when I was told it would be, which meant I was not able to wear it for the event I needed it for. Second item was not ready a month later. Then they attempted to charge me twice for the second item.
Do not use this place of business.

I bought a maxi dress from Alter D State and it was long. I took it to this place for alteration. I suggested how they can cut the fabric to shorten it but the tailor told me a different way to alter the dress not to destroy the print of the dress and it also less costly on my part. Very knowledgeable staff and professionally done! I could not tell that my dress was altered! I recommended this place to my co-​worker who needs her pants hemmed.

So I bought a dress from free people the other week and they told me that I could get a 10% discount at Ace Tailors. I subsequently brought my dress to Ace Tailors to have it fitted and then I was told that it would be ready in a week. I was not credited 10% of the bill so unfortunately my beef is not with them but with free people on this aspect. They did decent work. Upon coming home and inspecting it a little bit more, I noticed that some of the edges where the dress meets the crochet, along the back, were not reinforced in the correct manner in which to support the dress along the bodice. The crochet would be pulled, then frayed, and then torn off within a couple wearings. I had to go back and reinforce the crochet to the arm strap and backpiece, as to make sure the dress is reinforced without problematic issue later. They did quick work though and all in all it fit very well. Hence the 3 stars… check the work thoroughly, know you might have to reinforce later.

This was my first time going to a tailor and I had a great experience. The alteration to hem a pair of pants took one week, they said this was a busy period (the month of May); they replicated the original hem style and did a superb job, IMO. Would probably go again. $ 14 dollars for that service.

When I purchased new pants for work I wanted them to be the perfect length so I went to Ace Custom Tailors.
They were very professional and knowledgeable and had a quick turn around with my pants hemmed perfectly.
They are my tailors in Austin from now on — highly recommended.

Quick turn around on getting my bridesmaids dress hemmed and it was only $ 38. One of the best prices I found around town. They even steamed the wrinkles out of the dress and didn’t charge extra. I will definitely be going back for other alterations I have been putting off.

I brought my wedding dress in two weeks before the big day and these wonderful women. did everything I needed in a week. They were very kind and accomodating on such short notice. The dress fit perfectly after they worked their magic. Thanks so much!

I don’t get a lot of tailoring done so imagine my surprise when I discovered most places wanted to charge me upwards of $ 100 just to raise the hem on my bridesmaid’s dress a couple of inches! Even to a «newbie» that seemed extravagant.
Ace Tailors were able to get it done for a third of the price and in 2 day’s time. They even have me a 10% discount for checking in with Unilocal.The work was impeccable and I wouldn’t hesitate to use them again for anything. Stellar work, unbeatable prices, quick turnaround and very courteous staff. What more do you want?

I dropped off my wedding dress to this location on Far West and they did an AMAZING job! They were less than half the price Davids Bridal was going to be, and they got all of the alterations perfect! Both when dropping off my dress and picking up, they were very personable and accommodating. They got it down extremely fast as well. I definitely recommend this place to ANYONE!

These guys are great. Each time I’ve been there, they’ve been courteous and rushed my alterations at no additional charge. They even fixed a torn seam in my pants in 2 minutes while I waited, and didn’t even charge me for it. That is customer service! I will bring all my alterations to them from now on.

I have a lot of experience with tailors and am awfully finicky. Ace on 12^th Street meets or exceeds my expectations every single time.
In fact, I went to them with a special challenge: I saw a chance to really delight my sister, who, through illness, had grown very thin. We took 20+ pieces to them, with my sister in tow. They treated her like a queen, and, for a very reasonable fee, made her clothes fit beautifully. It was a great experience for both of us – and Ace gets all the credit!

I’ve had numerous jeans and dress pants hemmed here, not only do they match the thread and the appropriate width– they turn out fabulous. Too scared to try anywhere else with my clothes!

I purchased my wedding dress in Houston. It was a sample dress (read: about 10 sizes too big.) I’m short (read: about 14″ too long.) It was lace (read: not easy to adjust.) It was strapless (read: interior corestry demon magic to size down.) The place I purchased it from did in-​house alterations. Great. They were going to re-​size it over the course of two months. I’d have my final fitting two months before the wedding. All great, yeah?
Yeah. I call to schedule my final fitting. I get voicemail. I leave a voicemail. The recording promises I’ll get a call back within 24 hours, the alterations dept is busy heping other customers, etc. Ok.
No call.
I call again the next day. Voicemail.
No call back.
I call again the third day. I refuse voicemail. I speak to someone. They want to schedule an initial fitting. Five weeks from now. Alterations will take three weeks. My wedding is in 8 weeks. Did you do the math? Yeah, they wanted me to pick up my dress, hoping it would fit, the day before the wedding. Ha.
I’m angry. I’m frantic. I’m pulling my first (and I hope only) Bridezilla moment. I’m running an errand. I drive by Express Alterations. I see «Best of… Austin Chronicle… Multiple Years…» I stop in.
I explain the dress. I explain the sizing issue. I explain the timeline.
Answer I receive: We can do that, it’ll take about a week. Here’s your price quote.
The price was in line with what I was going to be paying in Houston. The week timeline sounded great.
I brought in the dress. I put it on. I got a little worried. She pinned it. She commented on how much too big it was. She pinned more.
I’d never had something altered before. No experience with a tailor. No idea what was normal. Nada. This made me a nervous wreck for a week. I went back to try it on. It fit. It looked like it was made that size. It stayed up. It was even.
Now that it fit, it needed to lose 14″ off the bottom. Did I mention it was lace? And a different, non-​uniform pattern of lace? So if you chopped off the bottom 14″ of lace all willy-​nilly, you’d lose a lot of the detail? So they removed the bottom section of lace. Hemmed the main portion, and reattached it. And then bustled the whole shebang.
It was perfect.
I will send anyone in an emergency here. I will send someone with slacks too long here. I will send any and all alterations I need again here. Not only was their work impeccable, but their service was great and their prices were fair.

Tailors scare me. One lousy job can absolutely screw up a beloved item. I’ve lost a few skirts to some overzealous hemming. No offense to myself, but no one wants to see all that.
I’ve yet to find a tailor in Austin that does a stellar job, but I think Ace Custom Tailors is a perfectly fine place to drop off items that need hemming or simple nips and tucks. I haven’t had any complicated work done here — mostly skirt, dress, and pant hems (because I am ridiculously short), so I can’t say how they would do with something like a bridal gown or a suit.
Like some people have mentioned, it is on the pricier side. I’m not always sure how they decide the prices for each item. It doesn’t always make sense. For example, a hem on a cotton dress costs more than a hem on a lined, knit dress. For me, their dress hems have ranged from $ 18-​$ 30, which is pricey, but I’ve been pretty satisfied with their work. I’m not going to risk trying a new place just to save a couple of dollars.
On the plus side, you can pay an extra few dollars to expedite the service. I’m usually able to get my stuff back within 24 hours, which is awesome because I always wait until the last minute to drop my stuff off.
Overall, this place is fine. If you want to find lower prices, you’ll need to shop around a bit more.

I give these guys 5 stars happily, but if you’re reading this, understand that they didn’t get the rating for their pricing. I honestly can’t speak to how their pricing stacks up other tailors in the city. I don’t even remember what I’ve paid over the years with them.
Why? Because each and every time I’ve used them, it’s been an EMERGENCY situation. Gun-​to-​your-​head, people-​are-​dying emergencies. Horrifically-​piss-​poor-​planning-​on-​my-​part emergencies. And they come through for me with flying colors, every time.
Example: I needed a military uniform jacket hemmed and badged up for an official dinner the next night. NEEDED IT — no way out of this. Not only did I drop this thing off right before they closed that day, but I needed it by noon the next day (so I could still get it drycleaned in time). Oh, and the hemming job was a complex one (there were zippers involved, as I recall …) The woman behind the counter didn’t even bat an eyelash. She said there’d be a 10% price increase for the rush job, but it’d be done. And it was, perfectly. In an emergency like that, she could’ve charged way more than that — but she didn’t. GRATZIE MILLE!
Side note: they do military tailoring FAR better than the actual tailor on Camp Mabry. Just keep the regs on your phone, and they’ll take it from there.

I’m in a wedding this weekend and my bridesmaid dress needed a lot of help — like many sizes too big. The seamstress here made it very obvious she didn’t want to do the work it was going to take to alter this dress due to the many layers and altering the shoulders. As I was standing at the counter, I heard her on the phone complaining in another language about how much work it was going to be. Maybe she thought I couldn’t understand, but I got it — she didn’t want to do it.
Once she hung up, she successfully scared me away with a really expensive quote, even though I had a coupon. The quote was as much as the dress cost in the first place! She suggested I go elsewhere and I decided to do so since she clearly didn’t want to work on the dress or my business.
Thankfully, I found Fine Stitch on Unilocal,where the seamstress was unfazed by the amount of alterations and number of layers, just said «ok,» and started pinning. Oh, and she was LESS THAN HALF of the quote from Ace! With no complaining!
One star for being open on weekends and past 5:00 pm on the weekdays. And one star for a previous good alteration experience here, but there will be no more. I’m only going to Fine Stitch from now on.

LOVE this place… have previously gotten alterations done here, and just recently went and took my bridesmaid dress for my brother’s wedding in a couple of weeks. Just picked it up this morning and it is perfect… and, doesn’t look like it was altered to boot! Friendly service and prices that reflect the quality of their work. I wouldn’t hesitate to return here for future alteration needs or recommend it to others (oh wait, I just did!). Please note that they now close at 6 p.m. on weekdays though… they are usually busy after 5 p.m. on weekdays, so be prepared to wait for a fitting room. This morning they were a little quieter than on weekdays, but still busy.

I am utterly and completely lame about ever taking anything to the tailor (although I have massive piles of clothes that need tailoring everywhere — a product of 15 years of weekly shopping at garage sales). However, after snagging a pair of Sevens from a consignment store at the urging of Kimberly K a/​k/​a The Patron Saint of Good Butt Jeans, I was finally motivated to use up a couple of gift certificates I had for Ace.
My relative inexperience with tailors means that I don’t have much to compare this experience to other than a couple of misses with other Ace locations years ago. But the folks here were perfectly affable and my clothes now fit the way I wanted, so I really have no complaints to speak of.
I can’t seem to locate my receipt anymore, but pricing went a little something like this:
Jeans hem: $ 12ish, or $ 23ish if you want them to re-​attach the original hem;
Pants hem (lined): $ 16ish?
Pants hem (not lined, but double-​stitched) $ 14ish?
Repair of suit jacket seam at back of shoulder (required them to remove lining and re-​sew it): $ 14 (this price I do remember, as I was kind of surprised that it was so low compared to a simple hem).
A bit pricier than some of the other places I’ve seen on Unilocal,but it’s also in a strip mall on Far West, so higher overhead. Bonus points for being open on Saturdays (until 2:00).
