Austin Mustard Seed

Waking up early on a Sunday to throw on a fake smile for a bunch of strangers and pretend you don’t love beer can be exhausting. Austin Mustard Seed is a refreshing community of real people learning to love Jesus (and each other and their community) without the pressure to look, act, or sound perfect.
If you are looking for a church to slip in and out of quietly without interacting with anyone, you might want to go elsewhere. The leadership does a great job of providing opportunities for people to talk and really get to know each other. They do lunch as a community each Sunday, hold weekly small groups or meet-​ups, and even have a social portion of the Sunday service.

My husband and I, both native Austinites, found Mustard Seed after having left Austin for a few years and then returning and beginning the tiring process of looking for a new church. We were immediately drawn in by the openness and authenticity of the people we met and the sense of community that was evident even in the early months of the church. The focus is on Jesus and community. It’s very easy to meet people and get to know them, to be part of each other’s lives in a meaningful way. I’m very grateful we found this church!

I want to preface this review by saying I had an opportunity to be on the ground floor of Mustard Seed so I might be slightly biased. :)
With that said, Mustard Seed was THE place I experienced safety, growth, and belonging in my short duration in Austin. I only lived in Austin for 2 years, but I found community at Mustard Seed. I knew the Bible would be taught on a Sunday morning. I knew I would be encouraged to be the church throughout the week at my job. I knew there were plenty of opportunities throughout the week to hang out with members. I knew my presence was missed if I was absent a Sunday because I was told as much.
If you are looking for a small church, if you are looking to give church a try for the first time ever or for the first time in a while, I highly recommend trying out Mustard Seed. It’s warm and friendly, full of people following the Spirit. I could go on but I’ll stop here and task you with seeing for yourself if my review is accurate.
