Why is this place downtown on 6 street?!
These homeless people are on 6th street leaving trash every where and trying to sell drugs to any one passing by. It gives Austin a bad rap in an iconic area!
I have an idea! Let’s build a homeless shelter in the middle of downtown so vagrants can peddle drugs to all of the college kids and throw their trash and food on the streets! Brilliant!

I have volunteered here for the past few years with my dad. The ARCH provides valuable resources to the homeless of Austin, such as computers for applying to jobs and connecting with family and friends. There is a combination mail room/​hygiene desk for toiletries, showers and an overnight shelter.
It recently underwent an expansion and facelift, so that it could accommodate more individuals in a cleaner setting.

This is the city’s resource center for the homeless. It is well intentioned, and provides many critical services such as health care… etc
But there is overnight shelter only for men. Women cannot stay at this facility overnight. It was not built to accommodate them.
And this shelter is also too small to accommodate the current population of homeless in the city. It ends up frequently turning away many more people than was originally built to handle period. The building shows signs of considerable wear just from the constant traffic.
The police chief actually wants to ‘relocate’ the social services which do exist away from multiple public transit routes.
I am curious why he does not call for instead improving mental and other health care supports.
