Don’t buy the VIP tickets, you’ll end up sitting in general seating. The staff is completely disorganized and rude. The show was only okay at best.

Most fun I’ve had in a good long time. The tickets said«dress slutty,» so I did — and thankfully I wasn’t the only slut there! The audience was a fun crowd made even more fun, I suspect, by the free beer and BBQ served when we attended. The warmup comedian was genuinely funny, thank goodness, and Troy is a helluva funny guy and a very talented host. The featured comedian Jimmie Roulette totally ruined my eye makeup — I laughed to the point of actual tears. That night’s band, the Contrabandits, were terrific — I was wishing for a dance floor. The audience participation game show segment was VERY well-conducted — those things always have the potential to go south, but they kept the laughs coming in a big way. And the burlesque? Wow! There is so much I don’t understand about the physics of tassels. And the complete absence of tan lines! I would definitely go back — I love to laugh, and getting it all wrapped up in a pretty little package with beer, BBQ, beats, and burlesque — how can you beat that? I hope to see much more of the Austin Variety Show!

I wanted to like this more than I did. Maybe it was the lineup, but I just wasn’t that impressed. However, everyone else had a great time and I love seeing some life being breathed into Highland Mall. Yes, it’s weird to watch a show and look behind you at the empty mall. Almost surreal. For the price of admission you get entertainment, beer and food. You can also bring your own alcohol, which is awesome. Between the entrance that feels like you are sneaking in the back and the fact that we were carrying booze, it felt so clandestine and like we were doing something bad. Which is AWESOME! They gave out some great prizes to several audience members. I will say, it was entertaining and I think if there were some more comedians that I liked, I would’ve had a much better time. It’s because of the obvious effort and the fact that the tickets are such a good deal that I am giving this 4 stars. Hopefully, I will find the next time a more 5-star affair.

A group of us went to the show last week and we had a great time. There was food, there was alcohol and it’s also BYOB. I’m not sure if it’s always free but even if it’s not… it’s BYOB. The show was a lot of fun. Adding to the fun is the drunk audience. If you haven’t been, I suggest you do. We laughed all night.

AVS is a very very cool show. During the Live show, for about $ 15, you get free booze, food and great entertainment. The last show I went to a couple days ago had Charlie Hodge and Matt Sadler, comedian Andy Ritchie, two beautiful burlesque dancers and Junior Brown. Junior Brown! I have never seen him play live before, but he was just awesome. The whole show was really a lot of fun. Before the show started, they showed various comedy clips like Zack Galifianakis’ «Between Two Ferns». The one with Micheal Cera was hilarious! Local businesses support the show and the show does a great job of promoting them too. The bar usually serves Lone Star or Shiner and they have Firefly Vodka and a couple other liquors with mixers as well. It’s BYOB too if you are particular to your favorite hooch. All in all, this is a good time to be had at a very low cost. I highly recommend checking it out. They also have free screenings on most Saturdays were they give out prizes. During these screenings, they usually have free beer and food too. What’s not to like?
