This is absolutely one of the best concert halls I’ve ever been to. As a musician, I am a venue snob when it comes to acoustics, so when I say this place is beautiful, I mean it. I have been coming here for many years, but Bates has a special place in my heart now that my daughter is at UT and plays with the Longhorn Marching and Concert bands. It’s always a joy to see her play here. Can’t forget to mention the incredible pipe organ– you MUST take time to see a recital/concert here.

I really appreciated the seating here. You can easily see the stage because of the stadium seating. The organ above the stage is huge and just beautiful(TWSS). The building is a bit older and it shows here and there, but otherwise this is a nice venue for a recital or orchestra performance. The venue also seems to be set up well for good acoustics. We parked nearby at the San Jacinto garage. Bates Recital Hall is on the other side of the street(24th) from the Bass Concert Hall and the McCullough Theater.

Pay attention to the UT Music Departments updates or the Austin Chronicle website and you might be lucky enough to see a show here, as I was with a feature from The Chamber Music Festival. The space is kind of steep and with a 70’s design style but you’ll have great acoustics, plus the talent that comes through here is grade A. Located on UT campus in the music building. Parking at the nearby campus garage isn’t cheap but its the closest option unless you wanna risk parking just North of campus.
