Blackbird is the best! Whether or not it is gluten-free, which it is, will not even cross your mind, the cookies and pastries are that good.

3 weeks ago, I was diagnosed with celiac disease. and boy does that suck, suddenly all of my favorite foods are in the«no-fly» zone! Adiós normal tasting bread, so long cupcakes, brownies, cookies and beer, you know, all of those things that make life worth living! Imagine my absolute delight upon Unilocaling«Gluten Free Bakery» and«Lakeway» and finding this freakin’ amazing gem of a place! AND it just opened 3 weeks ago. I was so excited that we drove out during an epic storm determined to locate Blackbird Bakery– Be warned, it’s a bit elusive to all but the most determined, like tracking a gluten free unicorn. It’s Suite 163 at Lohman’s Spur– there is no sign out front yet, so we had to troll through the back of the mall to read all of the suite numbers. low and behold WEFOUNDIT! Man was it worth it– they are cheerful and why shouldn’t they be? They are fulfilling a vital need in the community, delicious treats that are also gluten free. EVERY thing is gluten free– behold wheat-less nirvana. We sampled the complimentary choc. chip cookies. excellent, bought a loaf of bread,(apparently they sell out on a daily basis so you need to call ahead and order your baguette, you have been warned). we got a poptarty thing, that we shoveled into our pastry starved faces during the car ride home. flaky, light, and amazing! For lunch we had the bread. OMG, it was like normal bread! After three weeks of bread-adjacent, ‘bread like” sandwiches I was about to just give up and on a feeding tube. If you are gluten intolerant or like me, a pitiful carbo craving celiac, who debated long on hard whether it would be easier to give up gluten, or to just let my bones turn to powder and dust, then fear not, you have a reason to get outta bed in the morning! Blackbird Bakery! Now, if they would just open a brewery. just sayin’.

Delicious gluten free bakery. The atmosphere is welcoming and warm. When you walk in you get to take in the rich flavors of baked good. Definitely a place to check out!

Had the great pleasure to visit Blackbird Bakery’s first storefront location yesterday to celebrate with Karen Morgan. As of Monday, she had been open for four days, and is waiting for her pastry glass display case to be installed. I have enjoyed eating Karen’s gluten free delights at various coffee shops throughout Austin for a couple of years now. Now, you can enjoy a cup of Nespresso with your muffin, quiche, fruit tarte, or any of the daily specials available. If you are lucky, also enjoy a great conversation with Karen. The bread sells out fast, and by noon all the French Boule was gone. If you want a loaf of her yummy bread, call in advance to request a bread order to pick up on another day. Everything Karen creates is delicious, and doesn’t taste gluten free. You can also purchase her cook book and packaged flours here. Everything on display is made fresh in her kitchen in the back. They don’t yet have a outdoor sign, so look in the window for the large Blackbird Bakery banner. It is worth the drive all the way to Lakeway to spoil yourself and enjoy a slice of gluten free heaven.
