Blue Note Bakery

I’m so disappointed to have been left empty handed by Blue Note less than 24 hours before my event. As per every other bad review, the lack of communication and professionalism in seeing a custom request through and through was ridiculous. I placed an online request for a custom cake two and a half weeks before my event. With no reply, I followed up over the next week with calls and calls and soon they told me «Yeah, we don’t actually take orders over the internet.» So what’s the request form for? Then after no replies to emails for days at a time, I was told that the cake would be made and secured in design plans. I have emails of me asking how can I pay my deposit? Where can I give you my credit card information? Several more days go by with no reply, I get an email back three days before the event saying «Sorry our computer broke down.» All in all, now Friday less than 24 hours before the event, they tell me «sorry your process wasn’t put in the system in time so, we can’t bake it in time. But here’s a sister bakery we normally direct people to who might be able to help you now.» I PUT IN THIS ORDER TWO WEEKS AGO. Bye. Never again. No one can make a fondant cake in less than 24 hours, and get your ish together to take people’s requests! Ridiculous!

i had a bad experience with the business communication and delivery of the design and final product. the owner Angie was condescending. They scheduled to make my son’s 13^th bd cake and my daughter’s 18^th bd cake, then i did’t hear form them. i was concerned as my son’s party date was coming closer, i stopped by, only to find out that they didn’t even remember my order. Sean stated «the computer crashed» and they «lost all contact information». they were not apologetic, refused to make the cake in a short time frame and referred me to a few other businesses all of whom were too busy to take the order,. i ordered one form a nearby grocery store and was hopeful my daughters cake will make up for the mishap. My daughter’s cake was childish, and poorly designed and constructed. Again the business was not apologetic, and Sean told me «that was angles take on the design, that is not what i designed»!!. i complained to Better Business Bureau. The business did’t post a reply in a very long time. The BBB sent me an apology that the business didn’t reply. A few days later they did reply. In their reply, the business capitalized on their good reviews from most people to compromise the legitimacy of my complaints. in my case i was shocked to receive such poorly constructed product. it was not a matter of «pleasing everybody». the business owner happened to come out to use the phone and i took the opportunity to ask her a few questions to which the answers showed dishonesty and misinformation of Sean who was at the front line of talking to customers. if he is not informed about the range of materials, he should not make up information to mislead me that their product is made from scratch and go to a lengthy conversation about how they make it. the owner was arrogant and did not agree to call me back several times before i insisted. it was a crunch time as the party was a few days later, she disregarded my concerns and wanted me to use somebody else!, no one would have accepted to take an order in such a small time frame. she has Sean deal with customers from A-​Z then when he misrepresents the design to his team and they make a different product than he discussed with the customers, they blame it on the customer. i have seen several reviews from others who experienced similar situations to mine. i am not the only «unhappy customer». i have copies of the design we discussed drawn sloppily by Sean who told me not to worry about the sketch as he «got my idea» and stated he would make sure it will be delivered and done according to what we agreed on. apparently he didn’t. if you see the sketch, even as sloppy as it is, and see the cake you can tell it was not done as sketched. they asked for over a $ 1000.00 for the cake, that included a «design fee» of $ 350.00. i had a poorly designed and constructed product. one layer of the cake was dry and tasteless, one was good but not excellent and one was average.

The cake and cup cakes Angie and team baked four our wedding were delicious. Angie was so professional and pleasant to work with, she designed our cake exactly the way we wanted it, the cake and cup cakes were a success! All 350 guest loved it. We got four different flavors between the cup cakes and the cakes. All were equally delicious! Cake was delivered and set up on time and it was beautiful. I’m so glad we chose to get our cake from your studio Angie.

Full disclosure: I am not, generally, a cake fan. I come from a HUGE family, and have been to many dozens of weddings, Christenings, etc. and there have been only a tiny, TINY number of times I’ve enjoyed cake at those events. However, for my wedding, yesterday, Blue Note Bakery made a cake that was PERFECT. For our very small wedding, my bride and I indulged our private nerdy in-​joke and suggested a design from The Simpsons – in particular, the sad Valentine’s Day episode with Ralph and Lisa.
Blue Note brought the train from the card to life, with the message Chris choo-​choo-​chooses Theda choo-​choo-​chooses Chris around the perimeter. So, our hearts SANG when we saw it. Further, the cake was so delicious that it has changed my opinion of cake forever (but, has provided a standard by which all other cakes will now be judged.)
The entire process, from initial discussion of design, to selecting a recipe, to seeing it, and then eating it, was a complete pleasure.
The fact that this little storefront bakery is in my neighborhood may well be responsible for my imminent weight-​gain, as I look for excuses to order from them again, and again…

After reading so many wonderful reviews on Unilocal,I decided to try Blue Note Bakery for my best friend’s baby shower. I am so, so glad I did! It was a «fiesta”-themed shower, so I emailed Blue Note a few pictures I found on Pinterest, and they just went above and beyond. It turned out even better than I could have ever imagined! Please see the picture for the beautiful work they did. If you are throwing a shower or party of any kind, the cake is going to be centerpiece and the center of attention, so it’s worth it to spend a few extra bucks and get something amazing that will have people talking. On top of it all, the cake was absolutely delicious! I will be using them for any event I have in the future, and I highly recommend you do the same :)

From the moment I called to place the order to the pick up I was greeted with world class customer service! They went above and beyond with their level of detail on my cake. Thank you Blue Note Bakery for making our event star studded.

Second year in a row I have used Blue Note for my daughters birthday cake. Both times i have been blown away by the creativity and taste. They can make anything into a cake. Usually the «fun» cakes don’t always taste the best — not here! Amazing everytime…

After a lot of research and several tastings we ended up going with Blue Note Bakery for our wedding cake. Our tasting experience and the look of the wedding cake was wonderful… unfortunately the taste of the actual wedding cake was NOT. The layer that my guests ate was dry, brittle and tasted exactly opposite of the moist and fresh cake we had at our tasting. We have no idea what went wrong during the process and were very disappointed. We did give the bakery a chance to respond… and about two months later… still no real response has been received. We received a short email a few weeks after we wrote to them and complained and that one simply said they were sorry, would talk to the owner and staff and would follow up with us again… which they have not. Overall, with all the expenses of a wedding and with having to pay for the items prior to them being delivered, and prior to being able to even know if the quality is what you hoped for, it seems in very bad taste that a response was not even received. $ 600 gone with not even barely an apology for such poor quality. I wish that I was able to turn in that kind of effort to my job and still get paid for it but, when I mess up, I have to answer to someone about it. Overall, very disappointed not only in the dry mess that my guests, husband, and I had to pass as our wedding cake, but also for the lack of follow up from a business that played such a big part in our wedding.

Blue Note Bakery created the most awesome «Adventure Time» inspired cake for a friend’s birthday that I couldn’t wait for an occasion to check ‘em out myself. So, when my boss’ birthday just rolled around, I wanted to give him something cool and custom.
We share a love of food (or at least 40 hours per week asking each other, «Are you hungry… Me too…»). I ordered some themed cake bars, and I gave Blue Note a few ideas to play with. I was super impressed by the quality, creativity and taste of the cake bars that these guys whipped out in just a few days.
5 stars for these bars! Great experience, all around.

Amazing! Brides if you want to work with a business that will listen to your exact vision and make it even better go with Blue Note Bakery. Not only did the cake look great but people were talking about how great it tasted the next few days.

For my wedding I decided to use the #1 Unilocal review business in whatever category I needed. Blue Note was #1. I now know why. My husband and I went in together and scheduled a tasting and the owner greeted us and told us she could do what ever we wanted! The tastes, the colors, the designs were all amazing! We settled on a crawfish and owl on top of a three tier cake. Her fondant tasted natural and not chemical-​like. It was sweet like honey. We settled on Tiramisu and Lemon Lavender. So delicious! She even had gluten free options for my best friend/​maid of honor that is celiac! It tasted like the non gluten free option. Thank you SO MUCH!
She even helped me by giving me a wedding planning magazine and suggested a florist. KEEP IT LOCAL!

What a great job! We ordered cupcakes 1 ½ months before our son’s first birthday, which was going to be shrimp themed. We didn’t provide any ideas other than «blue frosted cupcakes decorated with shrimp wearing sunglasses. Through the process, they communicated with us via email. We picked up the cupcakes the day of the party, and we weren’t disappointed. With very little creative input from us, they generated adorable cupcakes. We received many compliments
Additionally, we didn’t have high expectations for taste and texture, given previous bakery experiences. We ordered a dozen each of chocolate, vanilla, lemon, and strawberry. They were all tender and flavorful.
I hope to use Blue Note for all of my future baked-​good needs. Very professional, very nice product. Made a fun party even better.

You will not be disappointed!!! This place is gluten-​free person’s DREAM COME TRUE!!! My friend bought my birthday cake from here. The presentation was amazing. Such a beautiful, yummy, piece of art work. The cake was creamy, smooth and moist. The 3 flavors I had were Chocolate Caramel, Vanilla Lavender and Lemon Raspberry (my fav). The cake was cut into bite size squares and was a huge success. Thank you Blue Note for making my birthday!!!

I chose Blue Note for our cutting cake (tres leches) and the groom’s cake (chocolate, Green Bay Packers cake). They were wonderful! The decorations were beautifully done, the delivery was right on time, and everyone enjoyed the rich flavors. I can’t wait to have the cake again in just under a year!

Overall, my experience with using Blue Note Bakery for our wedding cakes was a positive one. The initial tasting was superb — four of us went and all LOVED the cakes and choices and the ability to make our own combinations between the eight cakes, eight or so ganaches, and like 12 frosting choices. It was really fun to get to make different combinations and exactly what one would want from a cake tasting. Plus, they have a billion pictures of their very pretty cakes and wanted to be really creative when it came to ours and immediately started sketching when I said what I was looking for. And they put my pinterest up on a tv turned monitor so we could all discuss.
So that was really fun. And the cakes we ordered (one three layer with chocolate/​salted caramel and vanilla/​strawberry/​champagne ganache/​vanilla frosting, and one rice krispy treat cake) were really, really fantastic. Plus, their Texas-​Rum-​Honey fondant is amazing. We got a lot of compliments on the cakes, especially the chocolate, and how delicious they were, not just pretty.
The only reason I’m giving Blue Note four stars instead of five is this: over the eight months I dealt with them, the price on our order changed every time we talked. Initially, I had a contract they handed me at the tasting for $X. When I was ready to sign it and put down a deposit a few weeks later, they sent me a contract for $X+$ 30. Obviously $ 30 is not the end of the world but the contract does not have an itemized copy, so after some back and forth, we realized that the $ 30 added was for a dozen of their bacon-​pecan tarts. I never asked to add those, so that was odd but they took them off and I paid the original deposit for the two cakes.
Like any good vendor, I didn’t hear from or worry about Blue Note until the month before the wedding, when they sent me a proposal out of the blue one day and it was $ 100 more than my initial proposal. I replied once again asking why, heard nothing, and then a few days later heard back from them asking for me to pay the balance. I once again asked about the price and finally someone wrote back after some digging and said the girl who quoted my initial proposal and quoted me incorrectly, using a cheaper cost per slice method. Because of this, my initial proposal was $ 100 cheaper than it should have been, but using that cost per slice and a new cake size (which I changed only once, making it a three tier instead of a four, way before I signed anything), she’d come to a new total that was about $ 50 more expensive than the original.
At this point, I couldn’t keep up with all the changes and their paperwork does not explicitly state where the cost comes from, so I just said screw it and paid the balance.
Since our cakes were so delicious, I will recommend Blue Note, but I do caution anyone working with them to pay attention to the numbers, as they don’t seem to be the most organized group in the world. I don’t for one second think anyone there was trying to screw me (especially not out of $ 50 or $ 30), and I don’t think these errors were intentional, but I do think I needed to be more organized than they were and the mistakes made me wonder what my cakes were going to look like… so proceed. but with slight caution.

Two little words — Cake Bars! Blue Note did my wonderful wedding cake along with 7 cake bars for our guests in bright, happy colors with the «South Austin» cake mix, a swirl of color and deliciousness. I worked with Casi, who was SOOO patient with the many curveballs I threw at her. She never made me feel like the pest I knew I was being, put my bridal nerves to rest, and the cake (s) were delivered on time and set up beautifully. I am tempted daily to go into the freezer and take the top tier (which we’re saving for the first anniversary) and scarf it all by myself. I’m holding back but can’t wait for my next order because a year is too long to wait for another tasty forkfull.
Can’t say enough good things about their artistry and attitude. Forget about calling a million bakeries to get quotes, etc. Just call Blue Note, tell them what you want, relax, and sit back in anticipation of the first sweet, creamy, moist, delicious bite.

Blue note NALED IT ! So I needed a cake for my girlfriends birthday and didn’t have much time. I needs it done in 6 days and every custom cake bakery would not take my order do to the short time I needed it done :(I called blue note and talked Angie she told me they where booked and could not take orders. But I think she could tell how desperate I was and decided to do the cake. I picked it up the day before my girlfriends birthday and I was fucking blown away of how AMAZING it looked. The detail was crazy ! I gave it to my GF the morning of her B-​day and she was so amazed by the cake I don’t think she even noticed the Tiffany’s box with the diamond necklace I got her that was next to it for a while. lol I didn’t taste the cake because I’m a vegan, but she said it was soooo good and very moist. Blue note for the WIN ! Thanks Angie !

This place is great! We got our wedding cake here (red velvet with lemon cream cheese icing), and it was absolutely delicious! We froze the top and are it a year later, and I was bracing for it to taste not so good. It was surprisingly good! Almost it’s former glory;)

These people are artists. Their work is extraordinary and they take pride when they let one of their «babies» go. BTY I don’t like anyone just «walking in on me» and I too enjoy working by appointment. I want to give my customer the time and attention they deserve. So if you’re a «gotta have it in a hurry» person please go to HEB, they do fine work and you can get your Barbie or Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtles cakes there.
Anyway…
My non-​profit group ordered a «day of the dead» cake for an auction. Christy called me the morning of the event to REMIND me that the cake was ready. Our cake was the HIT of the auction and ended up being donated and auctioned off again and again.
Call them in advance, be patient, play by their rules and you won’t get your little feelings crushed. THEY ARE WORTH THE TROUBLE is what I’m trying to say.

As an avid watcher of cake decorating shows, I oftentimes wonder, «where in Austin can one order such customized cakes?»
Okay, maybe I wondered just one time, but I sure found out!
At work, you see, we take turns supplying the birthday cards and cake at our monthly birthday celebration, and, for February, the guys in charge of the birthday party decided to fulfill their longstanding promise of bringing Shiner beer to work.
It wasn’t beer exactly, but a near-​perfect, delicious replica in cake form. The cake itself was red velvet with some kind of butter cream or cream cheese filling.
I uploaded the photo of the cake, which I believe cost around $ 200. Blue Note makes wedding cakes, groom’s cakes, occasion cakes, and what they call «small bites.» They deliver, too.
