Bread Basket

I was there when the fellow was not-​served. The new manager guy is rude and a problem. Everyone else there is awesome and helpful.
Been there lately. Manger has chilled out.

I had the privilege of meeting the manager (owner?) of this establishment.
When I pulled into the parking lot, there was an old brown Chevy truck parked diagonally across three spaces in front of the store. They have a tiny parking lot so I parked in the only available space directly behind the truck. As soon as I put the car in park, the driver of the truck fires up the engine and starts backing up. I honk my horn so he won’t run into my car since he clearly didn’t see me pull up. He hits the brakes, I get out of the car and start walking inside. The driver of the truck follows me inside and demands I move my car so he can leave. Despite the fact that there was plenty of room for him to leave by merely driving forward, I refuse to move and tell him he has to wait because he parked like an asshole. Turns out the driver of the truck was the manager of the store. So you’ll know when you see him, he was a disgusting looking man — fat rolls protruding from his sweat drenched t-​shirt, reeking of alcohol. Since I refused to move my car until I’ve made my purchase, he says «Get out of here, I won’t serve you.»
I hope every store owner can learn a lesson about customer service from this outstanding example. Show up drunk to your own store, park your truck so you take up almost all the parking spaces, then refuse service to potential customers when they won’t jump to let you move your shitty truck out of the three parking spaces you took up.
But I can’t help wondering… maybe he had important places to be and I prevented him from vanquishing his arch-​nemesis. Convenience store owners often moonlight as superheroes right? His vomit-​inducing physical appearance must be cover for his secret identity. Ah, it all makes sense now. So that said I feel truly enlightened to have met this closeted superhero, but I will never under any circumstance patron this store.

PAY ATTENTION TO HOW MUCH THEY CHARGE YOU AT THE REGISTER. I have shopped here for more than 10 years. In the past few years they have made it a common practice to sell their beer and wine for 10% more than the sticker price. I usually point it out and they’ll lower it, but this evening the cashier argued with me that it was TAX. So I asked for a receipt, which proved him wrong. Another employee came out and told me a story I’ve heard EVERY time I question their prices– they say that their pos system gets updated and they floor prices don’t. I don’t buy it, and I’m done with them. Fortunately for east-​siders, there are new stores opening regularly– with better products and prices. Don’t waste your time with this place.

Cheap beers. Good people. Keeping it local. Streetart behind the building! Check it out :) best part is when i bought bunch of texas tea. One of them ended up tasting real funny. I returned it askin for a replace because it tasted spoilt or chemical just something weird. The guy was all cool about it. That is what great customer service is!

This is East Austin’s #1 convenient store! I always get my busted, beer and other whatnot’s from here to avoid the long line HEB seems to always have when I’m in a hurry. For a convenient store they’re reasonably priced and of course have a wonderful selection. Plus the guys up there always have a good story to share.

This place is totally the whip in of the east side. The guy who runs this place is trying to make a cool little inexpensive selection of wines and i think he is doing a good job! He seems to be open to suggestions as well, he brought in a couple of cool spanish wines for me!

Awesome selection of beer and wine! Their selection of beers and wines is very similar to the Whip In. Premium beers are available as single bottles and six-​packs. They carry all my favorite wines. The prices are very reasonable. My husband and I were really excited to discover this place recently since there aren’t many places on the East side that carry a selection like this. The clerks were also really friendly and helpful.

When I asked if there was a better place than the HEB on 7^th my roommates and all my friends on the East side said, go to Breadbasket. They’re really friendly, they have a great selection of beer and wine and anything else you need to tide you over until the next big shop.

I first went to Bread Basket because a friend had just moved around the corner and told me they had a good wine selection. She was right. They have a great selection for being a mini-​mart. I got so excited when I saw that they carried my favorite brand, Gabbiano, however they didn’t have it in a Chianti. I asked them if they ever carried it and they said no but that they would order it. I was totally stoked and sure enough a little over a week later I walked in and they had a full case sitting out ready to be put away on the shelf.
The good news didn’t end there. Not only did they order my favorite wine, they also ordered my favorite beer, Boulevard Wheat, as well. They’ve made a customer-​for-​life out of me. Whether or not they are making custom orders for their customers, the guys who run this place are great. They made a fresh pot of dark coffee for my boyfriend one night even though he resisted their offer. You just can’t find better service than from the Bread Basket.

I was stunned to see how big the wine selection is in this store! It’s like an entire aisle! And they have a ton of beer choices. Not everything is cheaper/​as cheap as the HEB but they certainly haven’t added the usual $ 3-​$ 5 markup that convenience stores often do to wine. If you’re in the area and need beer or wine, you should make this your first stop.

4 years ago when I moved to the East Side I was still driving all the way to the Whip In for a decent bottle of wine. This got to be a drag – especially at Miller Time when the traffic is a killer.
A coupla years ago, this little gem of a convenience store started carrying a few solid bottles of red and moved on to what is a now an excellent, relatively large selection. They’re particularly strong on Spanish reds with some excellent California selections. Cheap and delicious Cristalino is always chilled for those brutal Austin summer days. On average $ 2 – 4 cheaper per bottle than Whole Foods and they give case discounts.
Talk to the manager if you’re looking for something you don’t see and he’ll order it.

Do you like drinkin’? Well of course you do! Who doesn’t? Those of us on the Eastside know that aside from the standard beers and a few mexican ones, it is hard to find good beer with out the drive to Wholefoods or the TajmaHEB on 41^st. That was before I found this little gem! Bread Basket has an incredible beer collection ranging from belgian imports to local microbrew. As a nice cherry on top, their wine selection is top notch as well! My favorite little organic table red «Big Red Truck» was cheaper there than Wholefoods.
