Canine Cocktail Yappy Hour

During the first Tuesday of every month, Lucy’s Retired Surfer’s Bar hosts a Yappy Hour from 6−8pm. We’re all for the concept, but there is one big kink that need to be worked out. Service, service, service. I’ve been a server, and I get that it sucks when it gets busy. Solution: get more servers for the patio! From what I could tell, there was one person taking care of 8 patio tables. That’s ridiculous. I remember that I was in the weeds when I took care of 5 tables. So what ended up happening was that we got there a little before 7pm, waited around, asked for a drink menu, flagged the server down and asked for drinks, flagged the server down and asked for food menus, server came by 10 minutes later to apologize for water not being out, waited some more for drinks, flagged server down to order food, waited forever for food, 1 minute before food came out the server said that they were out of the appetizer that we ordered, flagged server down to ask for napkins, ate our food in less than 10 minutes, and flagged server down for the check. Remember when I said that we got there around 7? We left at 8:30ish…meaning, about 1 hour and 20 minutes was spent waiting around. It wasn’t that bad because we were mostly there for Lilly, and she kept herself preoccupied. However, if we didn’t have her there, the whole thing would’ve been completely unacceptable.
The upside is that the food that did end up coming out wasn’t bad (I was a bit nervous after reading the restaurant’s mixed reviews). Shrimp PoBoy was alright, Grilled Mahi Mahi taco was very good, and Fried Oyster taco was good. I would be back here in a heartbeat (and bump the review up to 4 or even 4.5 stars) for Yappy Hour if they get their service together. Still worth going to check it out (the presence of the really friendly owner slightly mitigated my disdain), but I’m giving this event 3.5 stars for now.
