Comptroller of Public Accounts

I rarely come into contact with any City of Austin or State of Texas personnel who are overtly helpful so I feel like I need to give some credit this time around for the super helpful Billie Hodnett at the Comptroller’s office.
When I was recently setting up a small e-​comm business in Austin, Ms. Hodnett took the time to explain how the Sales Tax process works and make sure that I have all relevant dates down for when it’s due. I have called her back several times with questions and she always answers her phone and has a kind, polite answer, no matter when I call. I don’t even have to listen to a call tree for 30 minutes before I get her.
I hope that my interaction in the future with the Comptroller is as smooth as it has been and I totally appreciate Ms. Hodnett’s helpfulness and congeniality.

I had a very bad experience with Constancio at the Comptroller’s office.
Apparently when you don’t file — or forget to file, «enforcement» officers have the right to send you threatening letters — saying that you are subject to misdemeanor charges.
On top of that, she just made up numbers to charge — then grabbed the money out of our bank account!
I had to go down to the office and convince an intake person to adjust the bill and to set up payments.
Bottom line: never get involved with the inefficient Texas Comptroller’s office. You are better off just making money under the table.
They are government extortion at its finest. Total nightmare.
