Getaround

I don’t know why but I can’t seem to catch a break. I’ve attempted to rent FOUR vehicles from «car sharers» on Getaround but either (1) the person doesn’t respond within the allotted time or (2) my request was rejected.
The rejection isn’t so bad considering his reason was that the vehicle was already rented out (though not indicated when requested or it wouldn’t have allowed the request to be completed) but hey, what can you do?
So after 4 vehicle requests in 24 hours that lead me nowhere, I’ve given up on Getaround. Too bad too considering it’s EASY money for the renter.

What’s the great thing about get around? You get to rent a car from real, local people! What’s the most frustrating thing about getaround? You get to rent from REAL, LOCAL PEOPLE!!!
I put in a request for a car today and BAM within 10 minutes an owner accepted my request! Just as quickly, however, he messages me saying «whoops, I didn’t realize you wanted the car for x time on y day. Sorry, can’t do it» WHAT? Well that’s great cause getaround already took $ 250 out of my account for it!!!
So I called getaround and they said they would refund the payment… great right?! Kind of… your bank will take up to a week to process this.
So, now I still need a car and I have $ 250 tied up in cyber space for a week. All the other reviews are positive so maybe this was a fluke thing, I guess I put my trust in the wrong stranger. Like I said, great idea but there’s too much room for human error for me. Good luck.

I have rented out my car three times now through Getaround. As a graduate student who interns downtown (and trying to be green!), I prefer to take the bus to work, so my car is often just sitting at home for days at a time.
You post pictures of your car, specify your availability and set the price! Someone will send you a message online if they’d like to rent it and you get an email and an optional text allowing you to accept or decline. You meet them with the keys, and Getaround provides the insurance for them while they are driving (they also cover parking tickets, tolls, etc. that are incurred — they will get it from the driver, but you don’t have to wait.) I’ve had the renter drop off the car and just leave my keys for me somewhere — the renters have been truly great!
Also, both the renter and owner get to review eachother online, so you can feel good about who you’re renting to. I’m very happy with Getaround — especially when I get the checks! :-) I met several of their staff during their launch at sxsw! They are great people who have been doing this for a while and Austin’s lucky enough to be their newest market.

It’s a cool rental program where you can rent cars directly from people. It’s cheaper than renting a car from an agency. For 30 bucks a day I found a nice hybrid, the owner was nice and the car was great!

Today, using Getaround, I rented a privately owned car for the first time in my life and it was a great experience. Kevin, the owner of a Prius, was very nice and helpful and his car was clean and super gas efficient. I rented his car for 3 hours and paid only $ 16.
From the renter’s perspective, Getaround is similar to Zipcar but has a bunch of advantages: Getaround is cheaper (as little as $ 5/​hr vs $ 8 at Zipcar in Austin, TX), Getaround will not charge you a ridiculously high late return fee as Zipcar does, and Getaround is much more of a personal experience than Zipcar: you rent a car from its real owner who entrusts you his or her vehicle and you drive their car carefully and responsibly in return. Also, most of the cost of rental goes to the owner, so money stays within the community rather than goes to a corporation.
From the owner’s perspective, you get paid for the time you don’t need your car, so it’s a nice and easy way to make some extra income while at the same time getting to meet nice people from your community. Getaround covers insurance, so the owner is not liable for any accidents during the rental time.
Overall, I’ve had a very pleasant experience with Getaround and will definitely continue to use it in the future.
