Granite By Design

This review is a long time coming. My contractor decided to work with this company in ¹¹⁄₁₂ after his regular supplier was out-​of pocket (nice way to say in jail for being illegal). So he went to GBD to see if they had the quartz countertop that I wanted. They did not have it in stock but they did have a marble slab they were happy to sell him in its place. My wife liked marble look but I was not a fan of marble itself since it has a reputation of marking up and staining easily.
Contractor told me cost was the very same and we said go ahead if it saves a couple of weeks of waiting on quartz (we had moved out for a month during remodel). Turns out the cost was $ 750 more than he quaoted bc he was unaware we had to buy the entire slab. He should have asked (or known) and GBD should have told him this up front.
Countertop looked great installed and they applied a very high gloss finish. Within days of mvoign in, the counters began to show marks and I noticed several areas where there were swirl marks under gloss where it had been sanded and buffed.
I asked my contractor to have GBD come out and take a look. Several weeks later, they sent someone out and he sanded the finish off a large area and left saying to my mother-​in-​law «I would never recommend installing marble in a kitchen». Outstanding.
I came home from work to see the now sanded area that was not resealed and was at least 4 – 5 times the size of the area I wanted addressed. Picture high gloss on 70% of counters and none on 30%. Just not good.
So I called Anna and spoke with her. She was very rude and interrupted me telling me that my counters did not have a glossy finish. Maybe at their store it didn’t but it sure did now. And guess who’s employees applied it? GBD. So she agreed to come out to my house the next day to take a look with me. Anna is the worst!
The next day I leave the office to meet her around 2:00. She no shows and doesn’t call either. I am now furious as she just wasted my time on top of the crappy work her guy did.
Called my contractor and he had GBD send someone back out. This person made an effort to try to match the finish but failed miserably. She told my mother-in’law that she wasn’t happy with the way it turned out and wanted to try again. They have made no attempt to fix it since.
I learned 2 things from this experience: 1) DO NOT work with GBD and 2) be very wary of marble, it looks awful after the first 6 months. I’ve never seen marble look this bad so I have to wonder what should have been done to protect the finish better.
