So I need to use a PC to download software to take practice tests for the GRE on Saturday. Unfortunately, none of my friends with PCs were in town, and the Austin public library doesn’t allow users to download software and there’s a time limit for computer use… despair began to set in, until I found Internet Café Austin! The woman working there was super welcoming and let me use her own computer to download the software I needed. Other internet cafes I’ve been to tended to be in one room with a ton of computers either arranged in aisles and/or around the walls. I think this building used to be an office, so there were several different rooms. This worked great for me as I was taking a practice GRE exam and I was able to have my own private room!(The front desk is linked up to security cameras in all the rooms, though, so don’t get crazy!) As for food, they have your standard fare of chips and snacks, but also those fun-sized bags of peanut and regular M&M’s(I refuse to embrace the«milk chocolate» rebranding) for 25¢! What a deal! There’s also a fridge with sodas, juice, and water. The downside… I went here during the day, but I’m not sure I would feel safe being here at night. I did notice that they lock the front door at night and you have to ring a bell to be let in. Also, I had to kill a cockroach that was creeping along the wall of my room. Finally, there was another kid there who needed to print something, and the computer in their Print Room wasn’t working, so he had to use mine. The woman turned my timer off, of course, but I would recommend one go to a Kinkos if you’re looking to print something. Speaking of Kinkos, this place is definitely way cheaper — I was there for 3.5 hours, and the price for my time plus downloading the software was around $ 18.50.
