I used to be a HUGE J. Crew fan. Heck, J. Crew was the only brand I would wear. What stinks is that I’ve been purchasing from the brand since the 1990’s, and have seen a steady decline in quality over the past few years, while the prices continue to rise. Recently, I noticed 15 of my Jackie cardigans were missing buttons — they just fell off. No, I did not send them to the cleaners. No, I did not wash them at home. Just out and about, and look down, button gone. I decided I’d head to the store and request that they repair/replace my buttons for me, as well as reinforce the remaining buttons on my sweaters. No dice. I was told«sorry, we can’t help you.» I inquired whether they could help me at least obtain more matching buttons so I could attempt to sew them on myself. Nope. Oh well. I guess not only has the quality declined, but so has the customer service. I may try my luck at J. Crew Domain, perhaps they will be more inclined to help a loyal customer.

Oh, J. Crew. I wish you were still in Highland Mall, because no one visited that store, and everything was usually on sale. I don’t know how I feel about J. Crew clothes… the wool sweaters are fantastic, but the one cable knit cashmere sweater I bought had holes in it within a month of heavy rotation. The jackets are great, but the pants just don’t fit me right, though they are high quality(strong fabric, good reinforcement, etc.). But! I still shop here because of the student discount. Yes, they have one for all students! Use it!

So I love J Crew but… I think I have more bad things to say than good. Sorry other J Crew lovers. I am a very hard person to upset but the people that I have encountered there(I mean the employees) are majority of the time just plain passive and offer no assistance. I always go into J Crew and search for the sale items and also regular priced items when paycheck time comes around and almost always, and it never fails, I am never greeted. Of course I’m sucked up to when a sales associate sees me with an armful of things I am going to buy but what is the point of asking me anything when I already found things without their help? So long story short, do the shopping online or go to the J Crew store at the Domain because I usually receive more customer service there.

I have been a fan of J. Crew since high school. It’s been a love/hate relationship though because they definitely go through seasons of greatness and just so so. 2009 was definitely one that brought me back in the store, catalog, outlet mall etc. The colors and styles were amazing. I asked for a J. Crew gift card for Christmas as a result and went into the store in Barton Creek very excited to find some new things. I was there early on a Sunday, it wasn’t particularly busy but no one greeted me and actually walked past me. Okay so maybe I was there in just a typical lazy Sunday outfit of yoga pants and running shoes but like most GOOD retail people should know, you can’t judge a book by it’s cover. I was there to spend and was upset that no one was asking to help or give me the time of day. I worked in retail all through college and know that kind of service would have looked VERY bad had I been secret shopping, plus I didn’t want to buy anything where I was ignored. Besides that the store was bare. I did finally stop someone to find out when they were getting more in, but still, one or two items hanging in a fixture is pretty sad. I had been told that store didn’t carry shoes and found out the ones they did have(like 10 – 20) were all returns. Wow that’s kinda bottom of the barrel to me. All in all, I don’t plan to stop shopping at J. Crew but would definitely think twice about messing with going through to the mall to do so.
