We went here for the first time and had a great experience. It was happy hour, so we got four rolls for like $ 16, which is a great deal. Given this, I thought the food would be mediocre, but it was excellent in my opinion. I recommend the longhorn roll! Fast and friendly service!

I cannot argue with their happy hour: 5−9pm half or deeply-discounted sushi rolls and other goodies is exactly what a poor college kid is looking for! Sure the rolls are not the best you’ll every have, but at that price and convenience(inside the Dobie Mall — I especially frequented this place when I lived at Dobie), I won’t complain. As a vegetarian, I suggest the sweet potato roll, their miso soup, or their dumpings(soooo happy that they have veggie dumplings!).

False advertising. They advertise their food as «half off» during happy hour. Crunch Crunch roll, for example, is 7.75 when regularly it is 9.95. Not half off my friends.

This place isn’t bad actually. I know people who don’t like it but maybe they didn’t order the right rolls. Longhorn roll is good. I love getting any smoked salmon roll and a roll that comes with mango. They have HOOKED deals and happy hour so definitely go during that time! If you don’t, then it might not be worth. Again, this is great cheap sushi when you’re not looking for some AMAZING authentic sushi.

This place was decent. I had the beef teriyaki. The portion was a bit small, but for under $ 10 I guess that makes sense. The beef itself was very dry and rather flavorless, but still enjoyable. Also, the water wasn’t very cold.

I hate sushi but there longhorn roll is awesome! Service is a bit rude, and there groupon is not worth it they will charge you double if you pay with groupon??? Crazy! Would recommend going during there happy hour pay cash and make it take out !

Pretty straightforward — you get what you pay for. A decent place to eat if you have the right expectations. Oishi is the place to go if you want to get your sushi fix without killing your wallet, especially during their Happy Hour. Obviously, the fish here aren’t as top notch as legitimate sushi restaurants, and no one should really be shocked by this knowing that their located inside a residence hall. Overall their sushi rolls are pretty good, but not because of their fish. Since their salmon and tuna aren’t as fresh as other places, they mask this with their use of sauces and frying batter(specifically the Longhorn Roll). I usually only come here for fundraisers, but I know I’ll get a pretty decent meal out of it.

If you’re looking for some quick cheap sushi, then Oishi is the place to go. If you go during happy hour, the sushi is ridiculously cheap. The restaurant itself is really small and has minimal seating. If you plan on eating there, you will most likely have to eat in the Dobie seating area right outside Oishi. I gave this place two stars because the sushi is not amazing. It’s decent. The place also reeks of grease. I’m also not so crazy about the self-serve wasabi and soy sauce. It just seems very unsanitary to me.

this is hands down some of the worse so-called sushi i have had in years. the flavors were thrown together without a thought to outcome. the roles were soggy and the rice was not sticky sufficiently… for $ 20 I sampled a cross section of the roles… across the board aweful. i am not finishing these and will have to find a supplementary dinner option…

It’s good for a quick fix for sushi on campus. Nothing to brag about. They recently expanded their menu. They have masubi now and some rice balls. Longhorn roll is pretty good.

The outside smells strange but the service is pleasingly fast. As far as the food is concerned, I enjoyed the fried dumpling(6 for $ 4). They were pleasantly crisp and the filling was flavorful. The beef teriyaki rice was average — it seemed that the beef was steamed rather than grilled — and I wasn’t a big fan of it. Unfortunately, the salmon sashimi did not satisfy. I don’t think they made the proper cut as the«marbling» pattern was different. It tasted a bit weird and was definitely not as soft as «A+» grade sashimi. Furthermore, they left some of the gray, exterior fish skin on the sashimi, which was a bit peculiar. They do accept Bevo Bucks though, which is convenient for students living on campus.

Warning: I don’t have a refined sushi palate – but then again, this joint isn’t meant to provide high-quality sushi. Also: COMEDURINGHAPPYHOUR! Located on the first floor of the Dobie mall, Oishi serves its purpose as a provider of cheap happy-hour sushi for poor college kids. Taking recommendations from Unilocal,we ordered the longhorn roll, the sweet potato roll, and the spicy salmon, spider, and unagi roll. I was extremely excited about the cheap prices: the longhorn roll contained 12 pieces for $ 3.75, and the sweet potato roll 6 pieces for $ 3. Usually I’m used to sushi that’s more than a dollar apiece. As a generally non-picky eater, I thought that all the sushi rolls were delicious. The longhorn was by far the best value. It was covered in a layer of tempura and it was super filling. I’m not quite sure if it was traditional sushi, but then again I don’t really care. The spider was really good, but it was slightly pricier than the rest. The sweet potato wasn’t as amazing as some reviews made it out to be, but that’s partly because it wasn’t what I expected. For some reason, I imagined it having a mashed potato-like consistency, but the sweet potatoes were cut in chunks and wrapped in rice and nori. Unagi didn’t really impress – very typical basic sushi. Also, I used a coupon to get a free iced tea and I’m glad that I did because now I know NOT to buy the iced tea. They taste bland like water, so just get water for free. Will come back!

Good service and great happy hour(4 – 9 daily) prices. Wouldn’t pay normal price. Good service.

Personally one of my favorite sushi places. I’m a fan of the longhorn roll. What I most like is that it is affordable with a half price happy hour every day from 4pm to 9pm and it is usually not populated so I can have good conversation there. I like sitting at the bar because I just order my sushi like I order alcohol — keep a menu on front of me and just ask for a new roll whenever the mood strikes. Unfortunately I can’t vouch for anything other than the sushi since I only ever get that and only go during happy hour. If you want something super high quality then this is probably not your place, but the sushi is still very good. It is definitely worth a try!

I’m not sure if the quality has declined in between my freshman year and my senior year… I used to love their Longhorn Roll like no other and the crunch and warmth of the tempura outside and drizzled with teriyaki sauce used to give me so much comfort and happiness. Four years later, I have it again and it’s just not the same! Have my taste buds graduated or is Oishi failing to meet standards? Plus, the area feels nasty and dingy, but that could just be Dobie Mall itself. Well, I’d still pick Oishi’s sushi over Zen’s underwhelming sushi… It’s more authentic than Zen and How Do You Roll for sure. But, for college students, this is an okay place to go for cheap sushi. Sushi Niichi, in my opinion, gives you higher quality for a similar price during happy hour though.

No. That is all I can say. No. Staff was rude — I paid for a tea, went to get my tea and the guy behind the sushi counter yells at me «TEACOSTSMONEY» Well, that’s why I gave the guy at the register money. Duh… The food is awful. AWFUL. They had fish thawing out just sitting on boxes out in the open. That kind of freaked me out. We had a groupon, so I am glad we had that to try the spot. It’s certainly not the worst I’ve ever had, but I won’t be back.

Now that the Sushi a go-go food truck got closed(tragic, I know) I’ve been searching for places to get good and inexpensive sushi from. Happy hour is a must. Service is good and relatively quick. Sushi itself is quite good, not world class by any means but for the price, worth it. It’s unfortunate that sushi is so dang expensive in this town… If I could eat it every day, I would! I’ll come back if I’m around the UT area.

I have come here for Happy Hour(4:00PM — 9:00PM) a few times. At Happy Hour, some of the rolls are half price while others are discounted $ 2 – 3 dollars. Whenever I come, I usually order the Longhorn Roll or the Sweet Potato Roll. I personally enjoy the Longhorn Roll. It comes with 8 — 10 pieces, and it is made up of crabmeat, avocado, cream cheese. It is fried in tempura batter with their special oishi sauce. If you like the temperature of sushi to be cold, you’ll be in for a surprise. It is a warm mixture of goodness. The sushi roll tastes quite creamy. This may be because of the cream cheese. The oishi sauce add as little something to the roll. It’s not too sour or too sweet. I am also a fan of tempura vegetables, so I thought that the sweet potato roll was good, too. For this roll, you get about 3 – 5 pieces. The potato was mushy as expected and encased in tempura. I have always tried Strawberry Peach Tea. It is not to sweet, and it is rather peachy. I didn’t know you could ask for ice, so I didn’t like how the tea was lukewarm. In the end, I have had better sushi. However, the location and the happy hour prices make it worth it to come to Oishi again and again. If I had a car, I would be checking out other sushi restaurants in the Austin area!

I went to Oishi once upon a time when I lived on campus and I don’t remember it being horrific, so my boyfriend and I went recently again. I love sushi of all types and think that they all have a special place in this world, from Uchi to HEB. That being said… This was just not edible to me. I just hated it. This is the kind of sushi that people that hate raw fish imagine. Fishy smell, bad texture, terrible rice. I could go on, but I’d rather not remember. We were there around closing, so I had a feeling we either got something old or badly made. No idea, I just know what tasted. BOO.

Came for a bento box on my lunch break. Saw they had chicken katsu as an option and got excited. It’s a shame that they don’t know the difference between tempura and katsu. It wasn’t until I got back to my office and opened the box that I saw the tempura fried chicken covered in a sauce I did not expect. Katsu is usually panko-breaded and fried, so I was disappointed. Also, the meal was supposed to come with cucumbers but instead came with some overcooked broccoli. I will say that despite way too much sauce and being tempura fried, the chicken was tasty and the rice was perfect. The veggie dumplings were fine as well. But, I felt a bit disappointed with the bento box. Besides the main dish problem, there just wasn’t that much variety in what it came with. Not light refreshing dish to balance the heaviness of the chicken. But, then again, for Dobie Mall, this was a decent deal and not too bad. I’m a bit afraid to try the sushi, but everyone here seems to think it’s a great deal. We’ll see…
