Even after reading the reviews about crappy service and mediocre food we decided to give it a try. We got there around 5:30and saw a sign stating«seat yourself.» That wasn’t an easy task in a packed restaurant and a whole section was closed off for a pvt party. We knew from the reviews there was outdoor patio seating, so we made our way to the back. Knowing it was 53 degrees out with temps dropping we were considering someplace else. With a quick look around we saw several kerosene heaters and knee those would be enough to keep up warm. A gentleman came around lighting the heaters soon after we picked our picnic table on the patio. The one placed directly behind our table went out after being moved while lit. Other guests began moving other heaters(while lit) to their tables. The table in front of us moved one in between our tables and soon after that it went out as well… So they began trying to ignite it. Didn’t seem like such a good idea for guests to be handling kerosene heaters, especially ones that have been drinking. Speaking of drinks, we were served out drinks 15 minutes after sitting down. Our appetizer and meal or was taken at that time. Once the food was delivered, no one came back out to the patio for our table to refill drinks or see how our food was. Now the food. We order burgers and schnitzels. The burger was extremely rare(dare I say raw in the center?). The fries were limp and wrinkled. The schnitzels were cooked in so much butter you couldn’t taste anything more than butter. The only reason I gave this place 2 stars is because it was a busy night, the décor is gorgeous and the German potato salad was delicious!

Great watering hole and food before events at the EC. It gets packed so don’t expect to get your food within 15 minutes. They have a seating area as well as the beer tent in the back. Great selection of beers. Good bar food in addition to some German plates. Looks like they have a huge selection of BBQ but we didn’t try it this time. Maybe next time!

We just stopped in here for a drink before going to an event next door. I hadn’t been here for years, and last time it was packed for a UT football game. This time we could take our pick of seats at the bar. Very friendly bartender, wide selection of beer, and all around pleasant experience.

This place is convenient for when we want to walk somewhere close by for lunch. They have different lunch specials Monday thru Friday. The salads are large and decently priced. The other food is mediocre, but service is usually quick. Our order did get lost on the last visit but the waitress addressed it and had our food out quickly. I’ve also called and placed an order to go. The food was ready in 10 minutes and packed well. Overall a good spot if I forget my lunch and don’t want to drive anywhere.

We came in on a TUE and we enjoyed the beer and the bartender Jimmy was cool. The food was great and we’re glad we went there. Neat place to check out.

Perfect location for having to grab a bite to eat before a show at the Frank Erwin center. It’s pretty much the only thing within walking distance. Walking in, it was little awkward not being greeted or really told where to sit, but finally after approaching a server we made our way to a table. Not wanting to fill up too much I opted for the veggie plate and got to choose 4 different sides. I love a meal of sides, so this worked out perfectly! My boyfriend and I also split the BBQ potato skins and pretzel. Both were fantastic and especially all the dipping sauces that come with the pretzel. Unfortunately I had left my credit card there, and in my panic the following day, they were super nice about letting me come in before they opened to grab my card.

I’m not really into German food or beer, but this is a great spot to hang with friends and enjoy a happy hour. With solid german food and BBQ, you are set to keep your belly full so you can drink more beer. They have tasty pretzels with sauces that will make anyone happy. I enjoyed a decent beer, even though it’s not my first choice of alcoholic beverages. Our waiter was a bit ditzy and we all laughed about how hard it was to order from him. However, when you are with a large group of friends, it can be hard to get annoyed by the small things. Had a great time, waiter split our checks without us asking and we were able to get in and out easily at happy hour. I also know my husband enjoys stopping here on game days for a cold one before walking over to the stadium. It’s a local tradition!

I’ve been here one time for actual dinner and twice more for events. The events were actually ok, which is why this earns a 2 star experience. They had sausage, queso, and pretzels at those events, and they were all pretty good. Bravo, scholz. For anything but German food, ignore this review and give it like 3 stars instead. For German… 1 star. The time I got dinner here was a different experience. The service was not good, first of all. Second, they list German as a specialty. That’s iffy at best. It’s like«barbecue/bar food, a ‘german’ sausage, and Wiener schnitzel» in reality. The German is an afterthought here, and I was really hoping for a decent German place close to campus. I was sorely disappointed. The German food here is simply not good at all. So yeah. Avoid this place if you’ve ever had anything even remotely close to resembling currywurst, haxl, or kartoffel/semmelknodel. Or anything German. At all.

They got Jay the bartender and umpteen spigots of sweet, spicy Weihenstephaner. What more could you want?

Great service! Great STRUDEL! that ice cream though… Our server was very patient and attentive, even though they were prepping for an event. The food was delivered promptly and without any faults. I will recommend this place to my friends and family.

Scholz Garten is pretty good for german food or bbq as a fix if you are in the area. They have a wonderful selection of food and their kitchen whips up the good quickly when you need them. I’m leaving a review for mainly the recent catering of 80 people I had at my wedding in Saengerrunde Halle next door. I worked with Erin to help get out some appetizers that would keep our guests happy before our ceremony and then havin dinner begin. It was awesome having them set it all up. I had no issues what so ever and if there were questions nothing I couldn’t handle as they were there to make the day easy and fun! Guests raved about the fried pickles and I loved the bbq we chose. Prices are great for a big group and they are quick and easy to deal with!

I come here every time I visit Austin! The food is delicious and the selection of beer is nice. When you first walk in, you are hit with the fabulous smell of barbecue, then greeted my the sight of the most beautiful bar I have ever seen. The menu is a collection of different types of food ranging from German Wiener schnitzel to burgers and barbecue. I’ve had the Jaeger schnitzel most often and it’s great. They even give you the option between pork, veal, or chicken. I go with the pork but that’s me… you do you. The Bavarian pretzel is also amazing and huge. It’s the best pretzel I’ve ever had and the Düsseldorf mustard they serve it with is delicious. I haven’t had much of their barbecue but I tried a bite of my girlfriend’s chopped beef slider and it was good. I look forward to trying more of the menu in the future. Now back to that gorgeous bar. They have a good selection of German beers on tap like Paulaner and Hacker-Pschorr. They also have many local beers on tap. If I could eat here everyday I would.

Love this place! We’re in town for my nieces graduation and we were looking for a place to eat close to the Frank Erwin Center where she would be graduating and we were told about this place! Just a couple of blocks from the center we were able to get in and out quickly and the service was attentive and the food was good and reasonable! I had the Catfish lunch special and it was good! This place was founded in 1866 and is touted as the oldest business in Texas! We will be back!

Walking into the Sholz, especially the event rooms, feels like you’ve just walked into the 1950’s and then into the town hall or community center or kiwanis club. Sholz is great for hosting events and has a kickass German beer selection. Also of note is the potato salad. As someone who rarely likes potato salad, theirs is a great exception. That said, the décor isn’t the only relic of a bygone era: so is the BBQ. Believe it or not, most BBQ joints in Texas only got serious about their food in the last decade or so. Don’t expect Sholz’s Brisket to be the 15 or 18-hour smoked masterpiece available at many Austin trailers. It’s passable but nothing special.

You go to this place for the atmosphere, nostalgia, beer garden out back, and the wide variety of draft beer. You don’t really go here for the food(although the brat and soft pretzel and queso are entirely decent). This really feels like old Austin, nothing hip or trendy about it, and I think that’s the biggest part of it’s charm. Also I’m mostly German, and I like the proud German heritage of this place. For the young and old alike. They don’t have a full bar, and my friends who only drink wine are too snobby to like the wine they actually have here. But I feel at home here and when the weather is good there is no better place than their spacious beer garden. I hear they are looking for a new food vendor to spruce the place up next year; this scares me a little. All I want is for the atmosphere to stay true to it’s roots, and if this can be accomplished, I’m game for better food.

My boyfriend and I think that this might be the best Jaeger Schnitzel that we have ever had. The sauce was thick and packed with flavor. He ordered sauerkraut and said that it was a perfect combination of flavors. The beer selection is pretty decent as well. Of course there are lots of German style beers as well as the mainstream brands. I tried a few beers that I had not had before and I loved them. One was a craft lager from Dripping Springs, TX. The only thing that I thought could be improved was the atmosphere. It seemed a little empty and not a whole lot of German type decorations. Also, they should work on sprucing up their outdoor seating. It could be so much nicer than it currently is.

I love their fried chicken salad and fried okra. My uncle always gets the bbq plate and the pile on the meat. Great quick lunch and friendly servers

Meh… This place looks cool from the outside but it suffers from a major«we are right next to the football stadium so don’t need to offer quality food or service-syndrome» Took us a while to get our food(our server was very impatient and didn’t bring napkins when she brought out the chips and queso). The food itself was very boring, standard ripoff German food. My Jagrschnitzel had a film that developed at the top of the sauce from sitting out and was entirely uninspiring. The sauerkraut that came with it was bland and soggy and the potato salad was just in a bowl of liquid which I didn’t totally understand. The big pretzels were pretty good. I may be spoiled by the amazingness and authenticity of my birthright Zum Schneider in NYC, but I’m just not a fan of low-effort German food. I give this place 2-stars only because the outdoor seating is nice.

I have been here around a half dozen times for swim officials«debriefs». That’s what we officials call a get together after a Finals swim session to eat, drink and be merry. The place has been around for years, 1866 I’m told. That makes it iconic to Austin in my opinion. It’s close to University of Texas which always works for our group to drive the short distance, or even walk. Parking is off the street, or a FREE parking garage in the evening. The area is safe and I have found it clean around the exterior. The place is large, a room with the bar and one huge area in the back and also an outside area that they have music. There is yet another room to the side where our group always sets that could probably hold a 100. There is no mistaking the restaurant is dated, but I have found clean and that includes the restrooms too! I have only eaten here twice, the most recent time was better than last. The schnitzel platter was really good, the schnitzel was possibly the best I ever had. Service for the most part on par to above. The beer selection is okay, some taps and bottles. I find nothing special about the list of beer and wine, but it always works. I can find something good local craft beer which makes me happy. I am sure the next time in Austin my friends will want to come back to our stomping grounds. As far as German pubs go in the Austin area, Scholtz Garten appears to be a clear winner with a clean place to enjoy food, beer and great service. But possibly best is that your probably with a group and that is what makes it all a great time anyway.

Giant Awesome Delicious Pretzel… you say?!? Well say no more, cuz this place has the Most Delicious Bomb Ass Pretzels. They’re Big. They’re Moist. They’re perfectly Salted. And they come with 3 Dipping Sauces: Garlic Butter, Queso, and Spicy Mustard. Personally I think the Garlic Butter was the Best, but the Queso was a Close, Close 2nd. Ughh, I ready to come back for another one!!! Bavarian Pretzel: $ 4.50…Worth every penny! We stopped in this past Tuesday night, sat at the iconic bar of Old Time Austin, and made it in time for Happy Hour! Tuesday Happy Hour(4pm — Close) $ 11 Any Pitcher(except Guinness) $ 2.50 Half Order Nachos $ 2.50 Okra Basket IF you haven’t been there yet, make it a point to stop in! Even better if you can make it for one of their Daily Happy Hours(M-F)!!
