If you have a kid — or you know a kid — who has trouble behaving or paying attention, you could do a lot worse than introduce him or her to the martial arts classes at Tao of Texas. A little bit of googling about martial arts will probably tell you that it can do wonders for kids who have attention problems, but that won’t do you much good if you don’t find the right school and the right instructor. At many martial arts schools, the instructors for the kids class are no different than the instructors for the adults. Sometimes, kids classes are just min-versions of what the grown-ups do. If you have a kid who isn’t a «joiner» or who has trouble making it through group activities, you will probably want something a little more tailored to his or her needs. Cathy Chapaty, who teaches the kids at Tao of Texas, has a special gift for connecting with children. Yes, she is a black belt and yes, she is a good technical martial artist, and yes, your kids will learn how to kick and punch and use self-defense. But on top of that, she has also helped a lot of kids learn how to sit still, meditate, behave, follow instructions, and be polite, upstanding little citizens — even and especially kids who struggle with ADD and ADHD. I have been training with her for years(as an adult) and I have seen her teach hundreds of kids. I am always amazed at how quickly she can connect with a new kid. I know I can’t wait for my own kid to be old enough to join one of her classes.
