I really liked the flavors and freshness of everything we sampled, although I was somewhat disappointed by my mushy falafel ball wrap. The other ingredients were great, but, the falafel balls were disappointingly mushy. Hre lamb gyro was a hit, with a good balance between the bread, meat, sauce, and accoutrements. Next time we’ll try the spicey gyro the folks at the next table were raving about. We have always loved Greek food, and this place will bring us back for another try.

My friend liked his Nikki special, but I was somewhat disappointed by my falafel wrap. The falafel balls were mushy. Everything around them was great — solid hummus, crisp veggies, etc. But I was super put off by the mushy falafel. I also wish the interior had better lighting. It feels a little odd to squint into a dark corner and find 16 buckets of tahini stacked 4 across. I actually think having all of their bulk items on display under good lighting would look very cool, and the place would feel more welcoming. The staff was very friendly.

Amazing hummus, great beef/lamb. Dolmas are really weird, did not like. Happy to eat here.

Okay!!! So I have never been to Geece. I’m not Greek myself so I cannot claim to be an expert on authentic Greek food however, I can tell you this Mediterranean Chef Café was different then any other Greek food that I have ever had in the best way. I have always loved Greek food and this place outdid itself. I had the chicken gyro — HOT and it was delicious. I highly recommend this spot and they also make and sell there own humus at HEB, Central Market and a few other places.

Unilocal lead me here after dealing with the crowds renewing my drivers license. You certainly have to know this place is here. Just north of 2222 in an old building cuddled in a residential neighborhood. The kitchen is bigger than the seating area giving more of a feel that you are eating in a working kitchen. You can’t help but get the feeling of clutter with shelving of supplies competing with walkways and elbow space. I wanted to reconfigure everything before I left. The lamb gyro was superb, well balance between bread, meat, sauce, and accoutrements. And it is a lot of food. The folks at the table next loved their gyro(spicy version) and salad. The meat pie takes 15 minutes and consists of a meat/onion mixture wrapped in filo bread. Wanted to like it more than I did. But don’t take this as a criticism. I suspect the problem lies with the reviewer. Good place off the beaten path, both culinary and geographically.

It’s run-ins with places like this that make me love how diverse & authentic Austin’s food scene is. Being in sort of an unfamiliar part of the town I looked up nearby spots to eat & just settled on the Mediterranean Chef, and I am so glad I did. Even from the outside I could tell the moment I pulled up that this was going to be some authentic and delicious food(I saw another review that said the outside suggested the opposite but they must not know how to spot a true hole-in-the-wall family run business when they see it). I ordered the Nikki Special(described as a gyro salad) with lamb & medium spice and was blown away by what I got. First of all, I’ve been to a lot of Mediterranean restaurants and haven’t ever seen spice as a gyro feature, but it really works. Second, I’ve never seen a Gyro stacked so high with olives, feta, lamb, and salad but you just eat it with a fork and a knife until it’s whittled down enough to fold the pita bread and from there it’s easy. This was hands down the best gyro I’ve had(the lamb was so tender and juicy) and there’s literally zero doubt in my mind that this will now be a location I show off to all my friends and pretend like I’ve known about it forever.

Fantastic food! So happy we stopped by. Husband had the gyro(lamb/beef) medium spice, he said it was the best he’s ever had. Excellent service! Friendly staff. I had the Nikki special, open gyro chicken. Tender, flavorful chicken, great presentation! We also enjoyed the mezza sampler plate, as well as the baklava(Soo good, perfectly sweet) We enjoyed a topo Chico and tazo green tea. We will definitely be back! This is also the home of grandmas hummus if you enjoy that at your local grocery.

Such an awesome spot. The place feels so genuine from the staff to the plates. The food is amazing, though the meat pie wasn’t for me. Parking was limited though it suited the small space. I will definitely be back — great Greek food. You likely have seen that this is the home of grandmas hummus, which is amazing in and of itself. I went with the burrito and the spicy meat and was thankful I did.

My absolute favorite Hummus is Grandmas hummus which is made right here at Mediterranean Chef Café, they also have a very short but great menu. I ordered the Nikki’s special which I thought was delicious and fresh. This is a very small place located in a neighborhood, a hidden gem is what I would call it. I’m happy I found this place and will definitely be back!

The very best hummus I’ve ever put in my mouth. For months I’d wander by The Mediterranean Chef’s booth at the Barton Creek Farmer’s Market and indulge in a small flavor of «Grandma’s Hummus». The owners serve samples with tostado chips deep fried in coconut oil. Tasty and wholesome! Eventually, I understood they were starting to understand me. I was fresh out of funny glasses and large noses so I relented and bought a container.

Wow, that was delicious! I got a chicken gyro and a falafel pita sandwich. Both were fantastic, but my tastebuds fell in love with the gyro. I asked for medium heat and that was plenty hot enough. The only issue was that one of the kalamata olives wasn’t pitted and I bit hard into it. Probably lucky I didn’t chip a tooth. The location is out of view down a dead-end road off a difficult intersection. Getting in and out isn’t impossible. Finding it without a smartphone would be a challenge, as I witnessed by the guy at the table next to me going to great lengths in trying to guide a friend to the location. The interior is also not ideal. It’s dark and a little crowded. But these are minor quibbles considering the awesome tastiness of the food!

Very friendly staff and absolutely delicious food. Grandma’s hummus is the best, and I really enjoy the Greek salad as well. The restaurant is really clean, the food is very fresh, and everyone there is really nice. Win-win-win.

This place is awesome! After discovering Grandma’s Hummus some few years back, it completely set the standard for how good hummus should be. Welp Unilocal,I finally discovered the place that makes it! And their food is just as good as their hummus. I think it must be the quality of the ingredients, as I’ve had a lot of Mediterranean food, but it’s never satisfied quite like this place. If you haven’t gone here, you need to get here fast. The Nikki Special is really special! You should get it and when you do, get it spicy(medium is just the right amount of heat for me, mild seems to suit my less adventurous companions).

Alright I was told about this place years ago by a coworker. He said he and his daughter would go there and share gyros. He’d also mentioned getting enough hummus to swim in. When I arrived two customers sat outside at a small dining table swapping stories. I was like man only two folks what’s up with that? I had to investigate more having come this far. Into the restaurant I went to take in the experience. I walk in and there’s about 8 people sitting down at one of the tables. No one says anything to me at first and finally a lady says did you need something sir? A million jokes in response to that one. I could tell they were having a conference/meeting. The lady without delay had one of the guys get up quickly and wait on me. The young man got up and stood behind the register and just stared. I initiated and told him it was my first time… stare. I perused the menu and decided on the chicken gyro, single falafel and grandma’s hummus(for the Wife). Everything was cooked fresh but I was a little concerned noticing one of the older guys putting something in a pot and eating off his hands. Look even I’m not so obtuse to think people don’t do it but wait until my back is turned. The people are cool though and it seems like a family restaurant. They seemed to be making lemonade in the kitchen or perhaps that was my wishful thinking. The place isn’t big but they appear to keep clean what they have. My chicken gyro and falafel were delicious food. My issue is that they put olives on my gyro… yuck. I love olive oil, you can keep your whole olives. The meat and veggies were real fresh though and I picked most of the olives off which saved my sandwich. It was a lot of food and I am(*yawning) sleepy now. I’m sure my review may change after my Wife tries the hummus and I try more items but for now 3 stars.

Dolmas are a yes! Greek salad is a yes! Falafel is a hell yes! Grandmas Humus is superb! Baklava umm… let me get one! Honey infused with tea rosebuds. Smells good. Looks good. Tastes amazing, bit of cinnamon. Foodgasm!!! And the guest service by Rob is freaking fantastic. He let us try different things and explained how and what things are made from. Oh and he gives you a wonderful surprise your first time here!

What a wonderful, casual, and yummy little place! This hidden gem is located across from McCallum High, on a little street named Aurora. I think it’s all residential on that street except for this restaurant. At this location they make food that is sold in local stores, but they also have a decent-sized, no frills, dining area. I believe you can byob if you want. The staff is incredibly nice. They give great recommendations, and they all seem just really friendly to interact with. They also play all kinds of music that is usually super enjoyable. I saved the best for last! The food is delicious. I’m not saying I am an expert on Greek food, but I’m pretty sure this is the best I’ve tried in Austin so far. Maybe I am wrong, but it sure is tasty. They have a Greek salad there that will blow your mind, and the hummus is very good. I’m about to go to Greece so I can report back about authenticity soon! Regardless, it sure is tasty, and I do recommend you give it a try.

This is a great hidden gem in Austin that fortunately not many others have found out about. You have probably already seen their food at your local store but don’t realize it. This is the place that makes all the Grandma’s Hummus. But in addition to this, they offer a small selection of some really great Greek and Mediterranean food. The gyros and other lunch specials have large portions at a price that can’t be beat. The environment is open and casual. The staff is super friendly because why not. They get to make hummus all day while listening to music. It is also really interesting to watch the process of the hummus making while you enjoy your meal. This place is 5 stars all the way and you should also grab some hummus to take with you on the way out.

In addition to the fact that I love the Grandma’s Hummus brand(which you can see being made in living colour when you visit Med Chef), I love what they’ve done in creating a casual, fresh, and fun dine-in experience. When you walk through the door, you’ll see the machine that packages what I consider to be the best hummus you can buy in Austin(Grandma’s). But – an even better surprise is that the team behind this amazing product is whipping up some insanely fresh, healthy, and delicious Greek/Mediterranean food to either eat-in or take-out. Building off of two meat staples – gyro(beef and lamb) and chicken – they offer a small menu with a handful of well-thought-out options. And don’t worry vegetarians – plenty for you, too. My favorite of these is Nikki’s Special: ultra fresh lettuce/veggies, your choice of meat, feta, and amazing house-made dressing piled high on a a round of pita bread. You can choose mild, medium, or spicy. The continued great news is that the spicy is actually SPICY. The staff is insanely friendly. You’ll want to return again and again.
