My girlfriend and I wanted a low key place to have a drink and talk. This fit the bill perfectly. We arrived around 11pm and were able to sit at a high top table. There are couches and low top tables but those were all taken. They have a limited wines by the glass most of the menu is bottles. We had been to dinner and really didn’t need a bottle, even though in hindsight we had four glasses of wine so a bottle would have been a better choice. The staff was friendly. It appears maybe this place closes a bit earlier than 1am. As it was clearing out after we finished our first glass. There are a few steps to go down once you open the door. If you have mobility issues that could be a problem. No sign at all to speak of outside. If the red light is on they are open. Our glasses of red wine were $ 10 each but large pours. I would love to come back with husband and more folks and order a bottle. My kind of place, quiet and you can hear the people you are talking with.

Unique downtown wine bar with knowledgeable staff and good wine list. I’d like to go back. My wife and I went and enjoyed it. It’s dark and cool inside, making for an interesting experience. Our waiter showed off the cool«wine saver» type corking system they have. I forget the name but it’s a way they can serve wine from any bottle without opening it. Uses a needle to puncture the cork and replaces empty space with nitrogen. Keeps the wine fresh even after serving some. Very neat!

OHMY… i love this place! if i go back to Austin, i’m definitely going back here. i love that everyone there are sommeliers and they really know their stuff… it’s just too bad that i can’t afford some of their best tasting wine… i love the atmosphere… i love that it’s hidden… i love that it’s cozy!

Went with a friend a while back – the owner was rude and the clientele was creepy. Our waitress was ok, but the way we were treated by the owner will make it one hundred percent certain I won’t be returning.

Dropped by one hot August evening, place was deserted… Basement AC was nice and cold. My wife ordered a simple Malbec — from the by the glass menu, I ordered the tempernillo… Mine was 16 per glass? but the disappointment was the 25 dollar glass my wife got, we thought we had ordered the 9 $ glass, but the old switch aroo. There was never any discussion of the top of the line glass — it wasn’t even that good. When we brought it to the attention of the staff, they could have cared less… Buyer beware when you go here, our mistake — will not happen again.

First time visit and really enjoyed it. For starters I loved the air conditioning. It was seriously cranked the way I like it. Pushing toward wine cellar temp. Great wine selection. Chill atmosphere, mood lighting, clubby comfortable. Kind of hidden and out of the way, not crowded. You have to be looking for it. Sure to return, chill, sip and be chilled.

Absolutely love this wine spot! Since they’ve opened, the menu has significantly expanded. The wine selection changes on a regular basis, and includes a variety of interesting choices. The employees are all very knowledgeable and helpful in selecting the right wine. They are patient and encourage sampling before you make a selection. Wines range from $ 20/bottle to $ 200/bottle, making it easy to comfortably stay within your budget. I would definitely recommend this place!

Without a doubt one of the most enjoyable bars in Austin. Not being a beer fan at all I find my bar options somewhat limited, especially when I want something cool, dark, and quiet. Red Room’s wine selection is one of the best and most unique in the city, with some surprisingly affordable bottles of Barolo’s and Barbaresco’s. Friendly and helpful staff along with a decent happy make this one of my favorite spots.

wine selection was very good. service was really really good. Only thing that prevented the 4th star was the lighting. I would have expected a much more ambient lighting to go along with the super comfy couches atmosphere.

This place is AWESOME! Another classic example of the very professional work by The Red Room Lounge and PersonalWine.com’s very own Michael Cousins! He’s the Best!

The Red Room was pretty unique in terms of Austin wine bars… it wasn’t really swanky or formal feeling like Cru or Max’s, who almost have a corporate, highly sanitized hotel bar feel; nor are they as informal and relaxed as places like Uncorked or House Wine, which are converted old homes with a very mellow vibe(my favorite type of wine bar). Red Room has a more reserved, speak easy feel with giant tufted leather couches, and located in a basement(albeit a fancy basement). Its the kind of place where you keep your voices down and feel like you should be dressed in a sport coat(which I happened to be this night); similar to perhaps a what one pictures at an old money, old world gentlemen’s club or cigar bar. It wasn’t a loud, raucous place; in fact, it wasn’t very crowded being the holidays and I don’t recall if there was music playing – having just drank 4 glasses of wine at a previous restaurant. We had about 14 people total, and had no trouble getting a few large couches. The wine itself was very well priced… we got a half dozen bottles of Rhone and the tab was very palatable. Overall, a pretty solid place to go if you are looking to relax in deep leather seats with a few friends. It has a certain charm; and while its not my ‘go to’ wine bar, its still a nice place worth visiting.

A wine lounge that even my guy friends enjoy. Sometimes it’s hard to let a good secret go, but then you also want others to come, so that your favorite place stays in business. Currently this place is hard to find, and in a very unsuspecting place, you can’t miss it with the black awning, red door, and personal wine sign. The owner let me know that in order to attract others, they are ordering a larger sign. If the red light outside is on that means they are open. Once inside, don’t be afraid to venture forth through the dark hallway to find a slightly more lit open space with comfy red leather lounge chairs, some high tables, and stools, and a long wine rack along one side. There is nothing girly about this place, there are signed rock guitars on the wall, and alternative music playing lowly on the speakers. There is no menu here, it is a wine bible. You can purchase wine by the bottle, or glass, and the prices vary up into the very expensive range. They offer meat and cheese trays to pair with your wine, thanks to Antonelli’s cheese shop. The cheese tray is one of the better ones I have had. Their house made champagne mustard was delicious. I wish they sold it by the jar. Their staff is very friendly and highly knowledgeable and informative. One of their female sommeliers has won awards. This is a great place for a pre-evening drink with friends. A relaxing place for someone who likes quality wine.

Wow. Very impressed. The only way to describe this place is the Wild Wild West meets a Chicago underground Speakeasy? The décor is amazing. The natural wood blended with the dark wood, the leather sofas, the lighting all perfect. I almost forgot… the wine and service is good too.

Possibly one of the best wine bar I have ever been to! This place can be a bit hard to notice, the entrance is very nondescript. Once you do make it inside you will find a fabulous basement wine lounge with brick walls, comfortable couches, and a little metal just to keep it edgy. Super huge points because the sommeliers here really know their wines. I wasn’t sure how to approach the wine menu and mentioned that I really enjoyed La Crema Chardonnay, Sonoma Valley variety. She instantly knew exactly the type of Chardonnay I was referring to and suggested a Qupé. It was excellent! Warm, buttery body, no acidic taste, and slighty oaky with a hint of fruit. I was so incredibly impressed at how spot on she got it! The atmosphere here is also amazing. I can see it being a neat place to come with a group of friends for a night on the town, a classy bachelor or bachlorette party, a birthday, or even a romantic date or anniversary. It is modern edge meets intimate and relaxed. Like the wines they offer, it just blends perfectly. I was hesitant at first because of the price but it was worth it for the experience, the knowledge of the staff, and the excellent quality of the wines. I would love to come back here again the next I’m looking to spend some money on a classy night out!

You’ve heard it before… you love a place so much that you don’t anyone else to know about it… well this is the place. But wine is all about sharing and so I am. Red Room is different and special because of the people there like Bryn and Joelle, the relaxing unpretentious surrounds, guitars and art on display, wide selection of wines, and the hours of conversation that comes from all of the aforementioned(the autographed GTR from SRV was what I want for Christmas!). The recent wine tasting event with Merry Edwards(Sonoma County) winery was amazing. Let me just say that Merry Edwards is a genius when it comes to Pinot Noir. This is not a place for dining(at least not yet) but it’s about the wine anyway. One reviewer was right on when he mentioned this place is perfect for the kindred spirits that have a passion and appreciation for wine and Red Room will elevate that.

I had visited almost every wine bar in Austin except this one. I heard about the Red Room Lounge whispered in social circles that partake in vino. Did I need a membership to drink there? A secret password to get in? Do I need to wear a jacket and tie? Well if you are wine lover and you have not been to the Red Room Lounge, you need to get yourself over there and try it out! I was tickled to read all the reviews here before I posted myself– you all are kindred spirits to me, I would love to meet you all there one day. The Red Room is not a starter wine bar — you have to work your way up the food chain of local Austin wine bars I believe until you can appreciate what the Red Room Lounge has to offer. This place is like the Uchi of wine bars in Austin, except you don’t have to wait over an hour to get inside. Only until you have made your pilgrimage to the Red Room Lounge can you truly say you are an experienced wine bar connoisseur in Austin. My first visit was on a date, but really this is a place that serves equally well for a group of good friends, family, or even a married couple date night who want a relaxing cozy atmosphere to unwind. The location has that basement /speakeasy feel to it as you walk down the stairs, which I love. There is a ton of space inside, lots of leather furniture to spread out on, dim lights. It is not loud or obnoxious at all– very laid back but not stuffy formal either. You can easily have an extended conversation here. Service was great– Bryn served us, he not only knows his wines, but he is that observant and experienced server who doesn’t forget you are there, but doesn’t hover over you every 5 minutes either interrupting your conversation. It’s a fine line, not all wait staff can master it :) The happy hour prices before 7 are worth getting there early for. I don’t mind paying a bit more for wine that is served in a pleasant atmosphere with good service. Only slight drawbacks are the selections for drinking by the glass are limited, and not a lot of Malbec choices. I imagine because they have a lot of patrons who are serious about their wine, they sell a lot more bottles vs. glasses for servings. Going to the Red Room Lounge is like treating yourself to something special. Sharing it with friends or someone special is even better! I really like that it is not a trendy overpacked place with people looking to hook-up. I will definitely return.

A bit hard to find(tucked in behind Vince Young’s Steakhouse), but definitely worth the hassles involved in finding street parking. A very serviceable and unique of BTG selections as well as a much more extensive of bottle selections that we didn’t peruse as much as we should being as there were only two of us and we had already shared a bottle of wine with dinner. Hosts/servers were quite attentive without being intrusive, atmosphere lends itself nicely to quiet conversation though there are a couple tables suited for larger groups.
