I initially thought Top Coat was a well-organized and cohesive group of craftsmen working under 1 umbrella. I like negotiating with the craftsman who is actually closely associated with the entire project. I like for the salesman to work as an employee of the craftsman. Mason Hill does not work that way. Mason is the salesman who is aware of skilled craftsmen who work as subcontractors. The carpenter, Gernado, is a 5 star carpenter. With a bilingual sidekick he functions very well. Gernado’s skill level persuaded me the whole project would be OK. It was not. Mason convinced me spray painting was the way to go. Melvin is a talented painter. However, having seen spray painting for the first time I can say I would never allow it again. Some areas, the paint is 3 layers thick and some areas it is 1 light layer thick. I was told the house would be sprayed twice with one coat vertically and one coat horizontally. Horizontal and vertical were both used but only for one coat. Many areas were so thick the paint had cracks or wrinkles in it. So a layer of paint with a roller was added to finish it properly. This is where the equivalent of 3 coats of paint exist. I bought 50 year silicone caulking for my house but the painter proceeded to use 30 year Latex caulking. The people at Lowe’s told me it was for inside use. Two locations where electrical conduit entered the house were not caulked and large openings existed where rain would easily enter. I had to fix these areas as well as several other spots. The trim also did not receive 2 coats of paint. It only received 1 coat of paint that was watered down. Fortunately, I used Behr Marque paint of the same existing colors so it looks OK, for now. I paid in advance to have the overhang installed over the bedroom window. They did not show up as scheduled nor did they contact me. Two emails and 2 phone calls to Mason were never answered. I finally made contact with David who is Gernado’s partner and they agreed to put the overhang on. It was expect for me to pay David and Gernado for this work. I do not know if they received compensation from Mason who had already received $ 200 towards that installation. While I consider some aspects of the job 3 stars, I give Top Coat 4 stars because these people are in a tough and competitive business. It is difficult to survive in this type of work where the competition has no regulations. Based on the company structure, Top Coat does a fair job. A preferred structure is where the carpenter or craftsman is the leader of the company and a salesman is an employee or works on commission. A company where all workers are employees of one business owner is also a better company structure. For the final product I installed everything back on my house and everything looks good. The main problem is spray painting, items missed and poor communications. Spray painting should only be done when a second worker follows immediately behind the sprayer with a roller and brush to even it out.

Mason and David did a great job from start to finish in managing the project and guiding us through the entire process. They were punctual and turned the project around very efficiently. They definitely went the extra mile in making our vision come to life. We are extremely pleased with the final product and plan to use them again in the future.

These guys are AWESOME!!! The work was done professionally and looked great. The price was reasonable but the swiftness with which they where in and out was very impressive. But to be honest anyone can paint a house it was the friendliness of the owner and the crew that really sold me on these guys. Mason was just a joy to talk with. I’ve already recommended him to many friends. I will definitely get Top Coat more clients.
