I’ve seen a number of psychiatrists over the years. Dr. Urrate is very good at listening to patient needs and offering treatment options, as well as informing patients about the pros and cons of the options presented. His office staff is efficient, and the wait time to see him is minimal(5 minutes). It is difficult to find good psychiatric care if you want to use your insurance to cover it. There are not enough psychiatrists who accept insurance in Austin, so Dr. Urrate’s system of new patient intake is better than many others. Some will simply say«We are not accepting new(insert name of your insurance here) patients.» Others will offer you an appointment 3 – 6 months from the date of your call. Instructions for new patients are posted on Austin Psychiatric Alliance website. Yes, it can be kind of like getting concert tickets — you have to call on the first business day of the month at 9AM and possibly keep calling back until you get through. Once you speak to someone, you will likely get an appointment in 1 – 3 weeks. They’ve found a way to manage new patient volume and still get new patients in within an acceptable time frame. It’s not perfect, but that is a system-wide problem, not something Austin Psychiatric Alliance created.

Very unwelcoming to new patients. You’re allowed to call one day of the month and three different voicemails tell you do NOT leave a message if you’re a new patient. Just keep calling back to see if someone answers the phone. Ridiculous.

Unprofessional and not caring. Cancelled my appt once 30 minutes before due to scheduling error. I had made the appt 3 wks in advance and was already standing in the office when they called to cancel it.
