It’s a real real shame to say, but this park was kind of a let down for a while. The hill next to it is where I learned to drive up hills in a stick-shift when I was 15. I’ve played a chess tournament on the bandstand. I’ve seen several concerts here. When there’s something going on there, it’s plenty cool; but when it’s unattended, there are legions of homeless folks who just seem to be hanging out. But this actually has been getting a lot better recently: D Now, I have nothing against helping someone who is down on their luck or is in some sort of trouble. But it’s very difficult to tell what someone’s circumstances are without having a heart-to-heart with each and every one of them. And on the surface, it looks like most of them are just hanging out in a public place where they can’t get in trouble for just chilling. All of which really doesn’t make me want to head down there on my day off. Sorry if that makes me a bad person o. O Besides that little hiccup, the place is otherwise beautiful. It’s one of the original four public squares on the Austin city master plan of 1839, and I think it was renovated a couple of years ago. The gazebo/bandstand thing was repaired and repainted and they redid all of the grass. It’s looking pretty spiffy: D But seriously, there are chess tournaments, giant chess, yoga groups, public gatherings, concerts, even weddings and other celebrations here. I feel like there’s stuff going on all the time! Check it out ;)
