Island Fitness

Within minutes of posting my review on April 3 I was immediately followed up with a phone call from the Owner/​GM of Island Fitness himself. Michael started the conversation with a sincere apology right away followed with reimbursement of the travel costs incurred the day I traveled to Bainbridge without an appointment scheduled. And not only did he offer the compensation, but also a complimentary massage at my earliest convenience. He was very convincing as Michael explained his value in customer service with a strong desire to win back my good will, hoping for the opportunity to show me that the series of events I experienced were truly an anomaly.
Not only did I leave the following Saturday feeling like I had a wrong overall first impression of his staff and business, the woman who gave me a massage was absolutely one of the sweetest, most professional people I have ever met. I feel like receiving a massage from someone new can almost be as uncomfortable emotionally as it is great physically. Carol, if you read this, thank you for taking my experience from «just another massage» to an hour of deep tissue relaxation and great conversation. And for helping my neck and back remember what it’s like to function and be comfortable at the same time again.
To those of you reading my words who take reviews as seriously as I do and questioning the integrity of this experience, not once did I feel like this was some clever method to promote a stronger «5 star friendly» business for profit. If I didn’t live on the other side of the pond it wouldn’t be a question that I’d return again. The only reason why I didn’t give 5 stars is because of the eqiupment, but I would give 5 stars to the customer service of my last experience. Since I can’t even hop on that ferry as much as I’d like just to see friends who live in the area, I will be referring anyone who asks where to go for a good massage to call Carol. And let’s be real as a former trainer and athlete through college I’m sure I’ll plug in purchasing a membership and some personal training sessions because of how important fitness coached by passionate professionals has been in my life and is for a healthier lifestyle.

Island Fitness is a great place to workout. The owners, Alexa and Michael, are fantastic businesspeople. They know how to treat their clients. I’ve participated in lots of activities offered over the many years, including cycling, TRX and zumba — teachers are well-​trained and lots of fun. I’ve been with a fantastic personal trainer, Loretta, for years (as well as a year with Jennie). Alexa, who does nutrition counseling, is both supportive and knowledgeable. It’s amazing how little we know about what we eat! With all the help I receive from the great people at Island Fitness, I’m looking forward to many more years at Island Fitness to continue a healthy lifestyle.

It is a really great space, though a little cramped. They gave me a great deal on membership, and then kindly continued it through an extra month, which I really appreciated.
It may be small, but rarely gets so busy that you can’t work out. The sauna is usually empty and the facilities are kept perfectly clean.
Their extra services are much appreciated, though I find myself never using them anyway.

Friendly and helpful.
I started going here because it is walking distance from my house and I was not disappointed. There was a $ 29 deal when I wanted to sign up and I have to say it was hard to pass up. In addition to the usually gym stuff (Personal trainers, sauna, Nutritionalists) they have a masseuse.
There are a wide variety of classes that are included in the membership and you can sign up online. There are a lot of conveniences at this gym along with plenty of parking on both sides of the building.

Island Fitness keeps getting better. The owners, Michael and Alexa, are really nice people, and they are always trying to improve their gym. It has been expanded and upgraded tremendously in the last year. Just recently they re-​finished the wood floors left over from the old bowling alley that preceded it. Also they have some new elliptical trainer machines that have all the bells and whistles, as well as a nice shelf on which to perch your ‘pod.
The young folks who staff the place are always friendly and courteous, which makes me feel good about the future of the island’s youth. It’s just a nice place to go to burn off some steam and feel good.
