This park is surrounded by a ghetto neighborhood. Lots of dogs barking and loud music from nearby homes and cars.

I picked up some takeout after church which I planned to eat at home. Just as I was passing Grissom Park, the smell, and my hunger, got the best of me and I decided to have an impromptu picnic here. Boy am I glad I did. It was only a moderately hot day by Bakersfield standards, 85 according to weatherbug, but still a little hot to be eating outdoors in the sun. Luckily for me, this park has abundance of picnic tables with large shady trees close at hand. I was not the only one enjoying a picnic in the park that day, but the picnic tables(there had to be at least 20 of them) were arranged far enough apart that we all had at least a modicum of privacy. There were also a number of charcoal grilling stations sprinkled throughout the picnic areas — at least 10 of them, and I could smell hamburgers and hot dogs roasting on them. There was a large grassy area where a couple was exercising their large dogs. Yes, they were off the leash but they were having a great time bounding about and didn’t bother any of the picnickers. There was a large area with playground equipment for both small and large children which I believe had sand beneath it to guard against injuries from falls. There were also basketball courts and a public restroom. There were a number of families with children out enjoying the relatively moderate weather. There was a covered area with picnic tables and people had set up a number of tent/gazebo like structures to give them shade. It was a surprisingly impromptu and lovely outing in the park. I can’t believe I’ve never stopped here before, but I’m sure I’ll be back!
