Online it says they are a full service yarn shop. I arrived here Sunday. Shop was closed with a note on the door saying the hours they were open. I was there during those hours. Since no one came, I called the phone number and a message told me that the shop was for lessons only by appointment. I think they should change their website or at least the sign out front!!!

Here from Chicago with a yarn emergency, walked from my hotel only to find the shop closed twice during both weekday and weekend hours. Avoid the aggregation.

This shop is TINY! Disclaimer: The owner said her focus is on lessons rather than providing a large stock. I haven’t taken a lesson at this shop so I am evaluating the shop in terms of knitting supplies. Pros: +open late a few nights each week +owner seemed knowledgeable Cons: –yarn selection is nonexistent; the shop is very small and the shelves it does have are half empty –needles and notion selection is equally sparse Review based on 2 visits.

This store is like a bad employee – it’s never available and always has a bad excuse. I work near this shop – within walking distance. Over the past six months, I have stopped here no fewer than 10 times and it’s never, ever been open! Signs on the door, posted under the supposed«regular business hours», offer a whole range of excuses, most of them kind of lame. I’m sure it’s hard to run a shop by yourself, but if you can’t keep posted business hours, you need to have appointments or something. I mean, 10 visits? Maybe I’m just unlucky or there’s some fated reason I should not come to this shop – maybe the owner and I knew each other in a past life, maybe we’re doppelgangers who might explode like quantum particles if we ended up in the same room. All I know is that I tried, I really did, and that other yarn stores actually are open – so althought A Good Yarn is «convenient,» it really isn’t convenient at all. Being as it’s closed all the time.(PS: the storm door on the front door of the rowhouse, along with no displays in the window and the MS Word Times New Roman Excuse Letter, definitely cement the«amateur» impression.)

Their obsession with American made products got a little out of hand and their inventory was sparse. The shop keepers were insistent that washable yarn was inferior even after I explained I was knitting hats for toddlers. Huh? Every knitter has their own method. I purchased a pattern for knitting two socks at the same time on circular needles and some sparkly sock yarn(which was pretty pricey), but only because I’m on a holiday and hard up for something to knit on a nine hour car ride home. This yarn store is not even on my radar for recommendations, return visits, call in orders or questions.

I started knitting in 9th grade and felt seriously like an awkward grandma in stirrup leggings and a jelly shoes. Thank god stores like this made knitting cool again. I couldn’t bare anymore awkward stares from people on the metro. A Good Yarn is for serious knitters, but nothing but the best. You;re not going to find a ton of gross cheap yarn like at Michael’s, but an incredible selection of handcrafted yarn. You absolutely have to touch ever spool of yarn in the store, and if you have any questions, or simply want to swap knitting stories or tips, the staff is right there to listen and genuinely interested and excited about whatever project you’re working on. it’s so rare to find a store like that!

Located on Aliceanna St. one block up from the delicious Blue Moon Café, A Good Yarn is a small establishment with a pleasing exterior and a welcoming owner. True, this store doesn’t stock a large or even medium-sized inventory because the owner has made a conscious decision to carry only handcrafted yarns. When I travel, I try to visit a few local yarn stores and purchase yarn I couldn’t readily find elsewhere. Mission accomplished. I left with three kinds of beautiful, smooshy yarny goodness. A Good Yarn is also a teaching shop so it’s an ideal place to learn or hone your knitting skills. I heartily recommend A Good Yarn. I enjoyed visiting it as much as This is Knit in Dublin, Ireland and that is high praise indeed.

We were strolling down the streets of Baltimore when Tom asked if we could stop in. When we got inside. there was a knitting circle taking place in the back room of the store, but an older gentleman came out to make sure we were finding everything okay. He swapped anectodes with the boyfriend who wanted to buy some yarn for his mother(she recently took up knitting) and based on what Tom told him, the employee pointed out the various yarns they sold that would work for her projects. The only thing they get a star off for is price. 3 rolls of yarn cost him $ 28! But he was happy that he could find something for his mom, so that’s all that matters!

not much of a selection, its very small, but has lots of empty shelving. The woman that works there was very nice and very helpful. I was desperate for something to do to pass the cold nights up here in MD, so I just found some yarn that would work for me. They should fill up those empty shelves!

This is a cute little shop that could benefit from a larger, more diverse selection of yarns. I walked out with a skein of Trekking hand paint and a sweater’s worth of Bimidji, neither of which are available at any of my local yarn shops. I would be bummed out if this was my local store but was happy to see a few things out of the ordinary on my visit from out of town.
