Great classes and teachers. I am not a natural when it comes to clay but I enjoyed going to all my classes and learned a lot.

Came in to purchase some items I saw on their website. I walked in, took a look at the items in the store… and couldn’t find it. Turns out that not all the items on the website are displayed in the store(probably due to space issues). Anyways, I asked for assistance and the lady who was working there was really kind, helpful, and professional. In terms of prices, the items here are certainly more expensive than what you can find in Walmart or even Williams-Sonoma. But when you consider that they are handmade items and also help support local artists and art, it’s a fair price to pay :)

Wonderful house of art! Baltimore Clayworks is an excellent model of how art gallery and art schools can combine for the greater good of the community. Both buildings are just too cool and in a neat neighborhood: one is set up for the gallery space, and the other is where the classes, studios, and kilns are set up. The gallery has many different artists, featuring resident artists who live locally, associate artists who aren’t local, as well as visiting artists, fellowship artists, exchange artists, springboard artists, and community artists. This is one of the only galleries I’ve been in where everything was interesting and didn’t have that commercialized feel. All of the pieces had the artist’s character embedded into them, which I just love. Why get run-of-the-mill gifts when you can get incredibly affordable, unique, hand-crafted pieces here??? The studio spaces are nice and well-kept, and they sure have a lot of talent coming through here as seen through some of the works-in-progress that I was looking at. I can’t vouch for the classes, but absolutely everyone that I met that works here was incredibly friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. Come check them out!

Baltimore Clayworks is like home! This was the first place I ever did pottery and it was amazing! The instructors are phenomenal you can be as independent as you want and work at your own pace. It’s open late most nights and you can go in anytime they are open to work, even outside of your normal class hours. I took one class and I was hooked. I will be a student here for… life, probably!

Baltimore Clayworks was a wonderful experience! I took a class here during Baltimore Beer Week and we made beer steins. The staff were wonderful and helped me really enjoy the experience. If you’re interested in learning more about what you can do with your hands you should check it out!

Having a work-team event be fun and engaging is a challenge! Baltimore Clayworks made our afternoon totally awesome. We had a large work group(we are a bunch of professional consultants) and except for 2 of us, we had little to no experience with a potter’s wheel. Brit, our instructor, was so easy going about it and she really did make it seem pretty simple. It wasn’t easy for all of us but in the end each of us was able to make something and feel as though we accomplished something. I am even inspired to check out local classes to keep going with it. I completely recommend going out there for your own personal time or with a group of friends. You will get dirty. but remember… clay washes out! Bring an apron! Go have some fun and relax!

activity. I look forward to going to this place at least once a year. The project we did this year was to make a cup or mug out of clay. The teachers were very knowledged about what we were doing. They really took the time to assist you if you needed help. I thought that it was great that there was an interpreter there doing sign language for a family. I love when everyone has a fair chance to experience things. Our cups once finished will be displayed in the gallery to be sold to raise money. It was a great experience. The children that I took with me enjoyed themselves so much that they want to return to take classes. Way to go Baltimore Clayworks.

Baltimore is full of noteworthy galleries, so it’s not surprising that a small gallery like Clayworks(which is inside of a large house) gets overlooked sometimes, but it is unfortunate. It is definitely worth checking out. I only walked in myself because I happened to park right in front of it and noticed the signs, but apparently it’s been there longer than I’ve been alive. Although the gallery is small, it is full of light with giant windows throughout. It features the work of local artists that are so good that their works are sold internationally too. There was an extensive African American collection there when I visited, as well as an exhibit featuring delicate pottery designed by a Taiwanese artist. The gallery has a lot to take in — from pieces of provocative commentary(Jesus in blue jeans on a metal conveyor-belt cross) to the mundane, everyday beauty(a small jade-green teacup set just waiting for your mother’s china cabinet). There’s also a separate room for the gallery’s Community Arts Program in which children learn to make works of beauty themselves. You can stay at Clayworks for as long or as short as you want to without getting bored. It’s a nice place to take the family for an impromptu visit while you are shopping in Mt. Washington village or a great place to spend a rainy afternoon and take time to appreciate local talent. Definitely one of Baltimore’s little gems. Almost forgot to mention two highlights! 1) Everything in the gallery is for sale and 2) Admission is FREE(LOVEFREE!) :)

What a neat place! They often have interesting shows in their gallery and offer classes as well. Their shop is a great place to visit if you need a thoughtful and more personal gift for a wedding, Mother’s day etc.
