Like many non-Baltimoreans, I was curious about lake trout after watching The Wire. This place seemed worth a try, in spite of an earlier negative review here, because it’s named«Lake Trout», and 11 of 11 people liked it on another review site. Well, I’m now the 12th to like it on that site. My review is based on the fish: If this is lake trout, I like lake trout. It was freshly fried, crisp on the outside, white and hot and non-greasy on the inside, and had no noticeable bones. They do offer a choice of «lake trout» or «whiting», which I find surprising because I’ve read that lake trout IS whiting. Maybe the whiting is prepared differently, will have to try it when I can make it up there again. If you visit, keep in mind that(as of this writing) there’s no sign in front. It’s one of the unmarked stores between J.B. Discount and Fashion Remix Village. It does say Lake Trout in the window, hard to see when driving past.

After watching the HBO series, «The Wire», and moving to Baltimore City, I’ve been searching for the best ‘lake trout’ in Baltimore. I realize that what is being cooked up is probably not actually lake trout but some other fish. Read about and googled Lake Trout carryout and upon arriving at the place, I got excited that I was in for a treat. The restaurant staff seemed to be first or second generation immigrants and the general clientele seemed to be local and urban. The place is tidy but not spotless and is in a stripmall that felt fairly secure although a bit dark. They have several plaques that show their awards and accolades as the«best Lake Trout» in Baltimore. It’s a typical carryout order joint with a small counter with condiments if you desire to eat in and a display counter showing various hot and cold items on the menu. They offer quite a few money saving platter specials. They also offer a choice of lake trout or whitting. I ordered a «Fish Platter» which included two pieces of lake trout and two chicken wings plus fries. The wings and fries were plucked out from under the heat lamp and were not fresh nor tasty. The fish itself was a bit different than some of the other fish filets that i’ve had. Not sure what fish they used for the lake trout but there were a few small bones and spines, indicating a smaller fish. The fish was fried to order and was hot and fairly tasty but the batter was bland. They have shakers of what look like old bay and huge bottles of hot sauce, mumbo sauce, and some other unknown sauce(probably ketchup) that you can flavor your fish with. However, I would have like to have a good/great basic product before adding sauce. I do not recommend nor will I be likely to repeat.
