I grew up right around the corner from this place, and every Friday we’d do a pick-up and return to my Oma’s house to gobble the pies up. Well, they aren’t the way they used to be. Since I started going back in 2012, I noticed that they would consistently blacken the cheese. Numerous times we’ve complained, and have even had to order it «not well-done», a request more akin to one that would be made at a steakhouse. But, lo and behold, the pizza is burned. Nice staff, great house salad, pizza is still good, but damn it, STOPBURNINGTHEPIES!!! I WANTMYOLDMATTHEW’S BACK! Until then, I’ll continue going to Pizza John’s.

So I’ve been here a few times; but my review is only for one particular item. Because I’ve only had one thing from here and I get it every time. I found out about Matthew’s after searching for food while driving up I-95. I pass Baltimore but have never had a reason to stop except for the normal things that are required when traveling the highways: gas, food, and a restroom. This time it was for the food and a Google search turned up that this place has won accolades for it’s crab pie. Sounded like a winner to me… this is Maryland! So I got the crab pie(I always order without onions). It is amazing. A highly-edible buttery crust, lots of cheese, and a healthy amount of crab meat make this pizza a really good reason to jump off the highway almost every time I pass by now. When I call in, the orders are always ready by the time I get there and it’s a quick and painless transaction. The pie itself it single serving size in my opinion. Maybe 10″ and about six slices. I guess it’s shareable if you wanted :). Maybe one day I will try something else on the menu but whatever that is, I’m sure it’ll be ordered alongside my «usual.»

I went a second time and it wasn’t quite as good as the first. I ordered the same thing as before … the«Both Cheese» pizza with extra cheese. I think that the problem was that it was not as thoroughly cooked as the first time … so it was more gooey rather than having that crispy kind of «almost burned» cheese(which gave it such a good flavor the first time). I mean, it was still good … just not as good as the first time. So, I think that next time, I’ll order it «well done.» Meatballs were still good and the salad was cold and had(seemingly) fresh ingredients but the salad it relatively run-of-the-mill. Delicious Italian dressing, though. Minor complaint: why do they serve the pizza on cardboard plates? When the cheese melts onto the cardboard, it sticks … and I was wondering if I was eating some of the cardboard. Also note: alcohol is not served on Sundays.(Not a big deal to me, just thought I’d share.)

Great service, friendly staff & delicious food! Tried the house salad & caprese toast, both very good. The pizza, best in town! I already want to go back. Ah-mazing! A MUST.

This is a favorite stop when I return to my hometown– mostly because I’m usually trying to fit in as many crab options as I can in each quick trip. Matthews combines my love of crab and pizza! The pizzas are on the smaller side but deep dish so they’re very filling. The crab pizza is market price(think it was about $ 15 on my last visit) so I’d recommend trying one of those and another if you’re dining with 2 – 3 people. For people visiting Baltimore, this isn’t in one of the typical«foodie» areas so you’ll need to drive or Über but is worth the quick trip. Definitely a good place to visit to get beyond the tourist traps of the Inner Harbor!

I love it here. I always order the crab and the stuffed. Leftovers are taken home. Done deal.

A different type of pizza– do not come here expecting NY style thin slices! They only make personal style pizzas, but that’s probably because they figured out that no one wants to share them! They are that good. Service was friendly and the family history and vibe of this place is apparent and welcomed. In some ways, the atmosphere reminds me of an old school NJ Italian place! I went with one of their standard pies — sauce and mozzarella cheese only– to really get a feeling for the flavors. Cheese was a bit too crispy but the crust was phenomenal and buttery as deep dish crust should be, and the sauce is incredibly fresh! I love a light tomato-y sauce which is exactly what you get at Matthews. Some of my table mates got sandwiches– superb review on the veal Parmesan sub and also on the chicken parm sub. The subs used great bread which is the key! We just moved in around the block so will be back

The pizza is delicious here. I gave it 5 stars because that(to me) outweighed the fact that the pizzas are very small. My boyfriend and I got 2 pizzas, buffalo wings, and a salad. Which was enough for dinner and lunch the next day. The buffalo wings were ok, probably won’t order them again. Salad was basic. But the pizza was amazing. Other things to keep in mind: we ordered takeout and when picking up our order parking was a little difficult to find in the area. Also, the pizza tastes just as good reheated.

I loved the chicken parm sliders. I would definitely go back to get them again. It came with 4 big sliders and it was only 5.95. Large portion for such a low price. The pizza was good, not amazing but I enjoyed it. I will definitely be back.

Matthew’s NEVER disappoints. It’s one of our favorite places to bring out-of-town guests. It’s a no-frills, quirky casual atmosphere that I love! And you absolutely can’t beat the prices for the amount of yummy food that you get. You can easily split 1 big pie for two people, we like to get 2 pies anyway when it’s just my husband and I so we have leftovers! Always always always order the Crab Pie! Our other go-to is Anna’s Stuffed Pie. They also have cannolis from Vaccaro’s for dessert :)

We ordered the 2 cheese with pepperoni pizza based on the waitresses recommendations since it was our 1st time eating at Matthews. Damn tasty pizza for sure! Great quality cheese!!! Delicious sauce! Crust… hmmmm, different from what I expected. First off, the largest pie is only 10 inches… about the size of a dinner plate. Secondly, the grease/oil from the cheese oozes between the slices making the center of the pie kinda… moist?! Thirdly, the crust edges are perfectly crisp & golden… while the center of the pie is a little doughier than it really should be. Don’t get me wrong… this is a very yummy Deep dish Chicago style pizza! Just a bit ‘different’ from other deep dishes we’ve eaten. BEST pizza in Maryland?!! I don’t really agree with that… but I’d eat it again for sure!

We started with the chicken parm sliders on Italian bread. These were great! My only complaint was wanting more sauce, also a great value for only $ 5.99 for 4 large sliders. I’m really not a fan of deep dish, thick crust, or anything resembling Chicago style pizza. With that as being said I’m totally spoiled and have pizza in NYC several times a year, so maybe my standards are just off the charts. But I ordered an everything pizza with thin crust, it came out thick and I tried to enjoy it but I just found it to be somewhat flavorless and doughy, from the sauce to the cheese to the toppings. I was trying to figure out if it was me since the place has rave reviews. With that being said the waitress could tell I didn’t love it, gave it to us for no charge and gave me a coupon to come back. She really went above and beyond and you cannot beat that family run customer service. I will definitely be back at some point and see if I enjoy the thin pizza.

So I heard about this place because my teacher started to rave about it during class. We were learning about diabetes so it really couldn’t be any more appropriate. We had late night cravings one night and this place came to mind… because well… diabetes…We got here and the place is crowded and dinky. It was so crowded we had to wait downstairs in the bar for seats. I came back another time and it was much less crowded so it seems that the flow of people changes depending on the time and day of the week, though I don’t go often enough to know which day is best. The restaurant has a very rundown feel to it. Whoever designed this place must have had an awkward and loud personality. It worked well though because it feels homely and smelt like pizza. We got the Anna stuffed crust and crab pie. I have to say, I like getting a lot of bang for my buck, so I loved the pizza. It tastes like pizza, its greasy, fluffy, and stuffed with so much cheese I was lactating. The sauce was tomato — all good on this end. I’ll give it a stamp of approval. It’s everything that I want in a pizza. If you like eating crust, this is the crustiest pizza in the area. I thought the crab pie was alright though. I’m biased because I personally think that the price to meat ratio for crabs is absolutely criminal. Also, I hate eating crabs in general because of the amount of effort it takes to eat crabs. Eating crabs reminds me of that hard won battle for crabmeat and I can’t help it… I get bitter and disillusioned. Also, there wasn’t enough salt in the pizza. I think it needs more ocean. Perhaps adding seaweed or kelp will give it a good kick. I really gave this place high scores for the gelato though. Who would have thought right? A pizza place with gelato?! It’s kind of random, but I do have to state my case. The coconut gelato is to die for. It’s so smooth and creamy I would moisturize my legs with this for winter. It had so much rich milky coconut flavor, I would come back just for the gelato. That and for the fat pizza. I love pizza crust. I say definitely try this place out. It’s a good casual hangout place to go with friends.

I was estatic to try this pizza place. Primarily because I LOVE pizza and secondly Food Chasers recommended this place… They rave about the Crab pizza and Im from Maryland… so duh… I love anything with crabmeat and I had to try it. I went across town to this family owned pizza shop and was immediately greeted by the staff… I was asked was this my first time there. I said yes so she proceeded to explain to me the differences in pizza sizes. They have an 8inch or 10inch pizza. The staff also highlighted certain items on their menu. My friend and I ordered 210inch pizzas. 1 crab pizza and 1 everything pizza minus anchovies. Fyi their pepperoni is beef. not pork #winning Let me say this… the pizza was Deeeeelicious!!! Especially the crab pizza which came with cheese, backfin crabmeat, onion and old bay. Ohhhhemmmgeeeee. It has a pan crust and was very good. I will definitely make the 30 min drive the next time I want a good pizza! You can opt for thin crust too. The establishment has been around since 1940. Who knew??? Lol. They have won various awards and the customer service is great! Parking is hard to find though.

As always, the pizza wowed the crowd unfortunately the service left much to be desired. We were a large party(10) and knew we would have to wait for a table. We also knew that the pizzas take a while to cook so we asked if we could put our order in while we were waiting. After about ten minutes the waitress took our order and about 15 minutes later we were seated. patrons who arrived after us soon started getting their food but no sign of ours. Finally around 40 minutes after arrival we got our food. We wolfed it down and barely made our show at the Creative Alliance. That being said, amazing pizza and salads at a local institution, just make sure you leave plenty of time if you are headed elsewhere.

I was excited to try this place at first… when we gps’d it it was easy to find however Parking is rare in that area of eastern Ave. when we entered we couldnt decide if we were to go up or down stairs. The Bar area on the lower level seemed to have a bunch of roudy patrons so we opted to go upstairs. There was a lady who was crocheting at the first table who looked as though that was her permanent place or residency. We grabbed a table and ordered. I ordered the Anne Pizza(two pieces of pizza with chick inside and sauce between the two). The pizza was WAY too DOUGHY in the middle and dry on the outside. It was HUGE. i couldnt even finish a whole slice… it cost $ 15. Wasnt worth it. However the white pizza was amazing… even ate it the next day. Make sure to order right away when you arrive because service is slow.

Had no idea this was a Thrillist recommendation until a friend told me to try the pizza here. Thankfully I got the chance to eat here before I headed out of Baltimore for good! Here’s my quick recommendation for their infamous Crab Pie: 10″ Crab Pie PROS –not overly flavored: there is Old Bay seasoning(as there is in all things Baltimore and Chesapeak-ean) but it does not overwhelm the pizza –house sauce is different, not super tangy like most tomato sauce is like but not too sweet either. –crust was amazing: nice and buttery, good crispy and not too thick –cheese was great but wish they had used more fresh mozzarella. After the pizza cools just slightly, the cheese starts to get chewy instead of staying«melty» CONS –not enough lump crab. You definitely get the flavor, but for $ 14 a pop, I was hoping for more crab. Definitely wish I could come back here to try the other pies. Pictures here:

A great family owned pizza place. I loved it. This was a find for us on Unilocal. Thank you Unilocalers. because this place is great. The pizza is simply my favorite type and the service is fantastic. The crust is a chewy… not thin… but not thick type. Lots of types of pies to order. They do 8 inch and 10 inch. The 10 inch is a lot. The neato thing is that they also add carmelized garlic and basil to the top for no extra charge. There is a bar in the downstairs part that I didn’t visit. Not the best beer selection… no pitchers or pints… just bottles. Ha… I asked for a local and go a Natty Bo… funny. I meant craft beer. The beer is not fancy either. The pizza is simply delicious. The salads are iceberg based but large… cheap…and the house dressing is great. VERY close to Patterson Park… just a few blocks east on Eastern. Oh.they have gelato… really great stuff.

So the reviews for Matthews almost scared me away. It seems like people either love it or hate it there’s no in between. I’m that person. I did take out and got the ‘popular pizza’ and garlic bread. The garlic bread was soaked in butter and turned me off. The pizza was ok. Not my favorite but not bad either.
