Save-A Lot

When I lived in Bolton Hill and would sometimes only make $ 12 a shift, I would sometimes stop by here because everything is DIRT CHEAP. It’s actually astonishing how cheap some of the items are and it made me feel like Safeway and giant were marking up their prices a crazy amount. For example you can get 10 packets of ramen for $ 1 and like 5 diet Powerades for $ 2– inferior to Gatorade but so cheap. There’s also fruits and vegs here. Some of it looked pretty old but bananas and oranges are pretty basic fruits that always taste the same to me organic or not. They have a large variety of frozen foods and most of what I would see people buying was frozen pizzas and premade microwave meals. They also had deals on meat but my stomach is sensitive enough so I didn’t want to test their meat quality.
This store is pretty much the dollar store of grocery stores and the atmosphere is always very stressful. Lots of kids and moms yelling at their kids while carting around boxes on boxes of hungry man and non name brand cereal.
One plus is that they have a coin star but be warned that it will take a long time to get your money. They needed a manager to authorize the transaction and only one out of the 6 registers had enough cash and then our transaction made that register internally explode or something because it couldn’t compute what was happening/​the cashier didn’t understand what she was doing. Very frustrating experience.
Also even though the prices here are very cheap, the quality is below average (I’ve gotten stale cereal and expired goopy soup) and it always takes a very long time to checkout because they are under staffed, the cashiers lack a sense of urgency and are probably over worked, and many of the people shopping there are not the easiest customers to handle. Overall, not worth the hassle and I prefer driving to giant for a more peaceful grocery experience.
