I thought long and hard before deciding to review the Haven, because it’s the kind of place you want to keep a secret. As Baltimore’s première(almost it’s only) jazz club, the Haven is still able to draw national acts on a regular basis for live music every Friday and Saturday night, even though the crowds are not huge. For a live music venue, the Haven is a quiet place even when it’s packed. When the musicians take the stage, the room falls silent. The players are centered in the room and separated from the bar by a high railing, where the regulars can rest their arms and watch every move. I am not brave enough to do this and usually hide out in a booth further from the action(i.e. about 5 feet away). Intimate? Yes. Chill? Oh yes. Low lighting, not too smoky, vintage murals on the walls, dark wood, and an indescribably mellow energy. Your heartbeat slows down a little as soon as you walk in the door. Dress to respect the scene. If you wear a hat it better have a brim that goes all the way around. If you wear jeans and a T-shirt I guarantee you’ll be uncomfortable. Cover is usually $ 8. Special events may be a little more. Located inside the Northwood Shopping center. Oh, and for your convenience, package goods are sold out front.
