On the 2nd Saturday of the month Baltimore house music aficionados find their way to the Paradox for Ultra Nate’s Deep Sugar party. This is an after hours club that hosts what I believe to be the most consistent house party in town and quite possibly be the best party you’ve never heard of. It’s not uncommon for busloads of house heads from NYC to come down for this party. NYC comes to Baltimore? Yea, it’s that good. The venue is spacious and clean with 2 rooms and an outdoor patio. The main floor has a wooden dance floor that provides just enough bounce to keep people dancing all night. And people will be dancing from start to finish. Make no mistake, this is a dancer’s destination. This is also a DJ’s destination as the sound system and DJ booth have been custom built to make a great DJ sound even better. The sound system is the best I’ve heard in this country while being one of the oldest at the same time. This is fitting for a Deep Sugar event since the crowd is of an older variety. No youngsters hopped up on candy or thuggish types up to no good. Only tried and true house music fans who have been doing this since disco was evolving into what we now know as house music. Spirits are high and a positive dance vibe is easily created at this event. For those who may have thought house music was dead this is the link that has never been broken. If you are new to the general area and have been looking for the underground house party that you left back in your home city and thought you may never find again this may be a good place for you to find it again. Some DJ’s to come through Deep Sugar events in the past few years include: Louie Vega, David Morales, Frankie Knuckles, Francois K’s Body and Soul, Kenny Dope, Quentin Harris and a host of local DJ’s who have left their permanent mark on house music and represent Baltimore to the fullest including Teddy Douglas, Thommy Davis, DJ Spen, Karizma, Jerome Hicks and of course the Sugar Girl Squad of Lisa Moody and Ultra Nate herself. Deep Sugar happens every 2nd Saturday of the month from midnight untill you take your ass home. Note– they do not serve alcohol at this venue so keep that in mind. But they do serve pizza and a 3 piece & biscuit box until 4am. Come correct because everybody else does.
