We are in the process of closing on a home in the Union Square neighborhood, so we ventured out to the Christmas Cookie Tour this year. We are moving into our first home and will be coming from the DC area, so lots of friends and family wanted to join us for the tour and get a first look at the neighborhood and the house. If I was only in love with the house before, and not the neighborhood, this tour completely made me fall head over heals for all of it. The people are welcoming, the houses are beautiful, and of course the cookies are great! This was the epitome of Christmas cheer and the perfect welcome to the neighborhood. I truly can’t say enough good things about the experience at the tour. Not only will we be participating in the tour next year, I’m going to make sure everyone we know comes to visit us that weekend so they can experience the amazing event!

Why is there only one review for this event? Hands down, my favorite event in all of Baltimore City. Gather all your friends, pay $ 15(if you pay advance online), get a baggie and a map of all the historic, beautiful houses in Union Square(don’t be afraid. It’s an awesome neighborhood), walk from house to house to admire the re-dos and keeps of old architecture, and get a cookie from each house. Think of it as an adult trick-or-treating, but with cookies. Zella’s pizzeria is always a stop, and they often have free tasting samples(6−8oz) draft beer and cookies, too. GO! You won’t regret it, even if you don’t live in this neighborhood. A fantastic way to get to learn Baltimore, its historic homes, and the awesome neighborhoods and communities in the area.

Just before the 2012 Christmas Cookie Tour, Union Square Park received a major(6 figure) face-lift with a new fountain, a complete renovation of the iconic pavilion and various other improvements to the park. More than 20 homes were open for visitors with plenty of cookies to munch on. Even though the weather was a bit dreary, there was a good crowd enjoying the holiday warmth found in each open house. Seeing the park restoration was an added bonus this year and, of course, the H. L. Mencken House was open — a rare treat. The tour returns each year on the second Sunday of December — this year was the 27th event. It’s interesting to return each year since some of the homes return and one can see the annual improvements. In addition, new homes are added each year as new residents move in, make renovations, and show the results of their efforts. It’s a real tribute to city living contrasted against the negative perceptions many may have about the urban experience. Many visitors are former residents of the area or had family connections with grandparents who used to live in this historic district. It’s also a pleasant surprise to see how many are first-time attendees with several from far outside the Baltimore Metro area. It’s an annual must-see family-friendly afternoon event leading up to all the Christmas celebrations.
