I’ve been to quite a few PYO operations(that’s Pick Your Own for friends out there who don’t know)…and Gulick Orchard might be one of the nicest /non restrictive ones I’ve been too. The premise is simple… they have an orchard… they grow varieties of apples… do you want to pick your own, as long as the variety is ripe and being offered… go out and have at it. You get charged per lbs. of apples. You don’t want to PYO… they have some of the best pre picked around. Why not 5 stars then? Guilick Orchard IS5 stars in my book… IF you want to bring children along though… they are certainly going to fall 20 times tripping over fallen apples, and some other operations have some offerings for kids(playground /whatnot). This is strictly for apples… I’ve taken my 2 and 6 year old and they love the place. In Early October… the press their own Cider… never had it fresher. The more I think about it, I don’t even know why I’m writing this review. The last two years it’s gotten more and more crowded… and the last thing i want to do is fight all of you to get the juiciest apples around(and some of the most reasonable pumpkins I might add). Let my mistake be your advantage… take the trip up here.

Gulick’s is an apple orchard tucked away between Martin’s Creek & Belvidere that offers very inexpensive PYO apples. It’s a great place to go as a couple or to take the family and enjoy a day of romping thru an apple orchard picking & tasting all kinds of apples. They also have a pumpkin patch! My hubby & I went to Gulick’s for the first time last weekend(10⁄3) just when the Yellow Delicious apples were becoming available. We managed to find the place after a wrong turn & a few missing road signs(even w/mapped directions it’s a little hard to find). It was obvious that we were newbies because we DIDN’T BRING A WAGON like practically everyone else had. People were walking away with carloads of apples! & there were still plenty left on the trees! It’s recommended that you bring your own bags, but we saw them giving out paper bags to greener newbies than us. The orchard is on both sides of the road, so be careful! The ends of the rows mark the varieties of apples, so skipping thru the middle of the rows meant that you might not be sure what type of apples were growing the next row over. We grabbed the few plastic grocery bags we had & quickly filled them with Red & Yellow Delicious apples. We dragged our haul back to the barn to weigh the sacks of apples. The group before us had some 60lbs(!) of apples. We placed our bags on the scale & were surprised that it came to almost 18lbs. The cost? $ 8, a beautiful ride through the NEPA countryside, & a bunch of TASTY apples. We’re going to go back for more in a week or so, because I need apples that are a bit more tart for my baking. If PYO isn’t for you, they also sell pre-picked sacks of apples & pumpkins right in the barn! They cost a bit more, but the taste is worth it.
