Didn’t actually get to try Crazy Dave’s BBQ because hes closed Monday Tuesdays and when I went Thursday at 3 pm he wasn’t there even though the hours were until 6. I hope to try someday and update my review then.

Giving Crazy Dave less than 5 starts is a crime. Everything is great. I like by far the ribs. I’m hoping he moves south. Closer to Mass

Let me start off by saying that we have lived in Tennessee and traveled extensively throughout the South and we know good barbeque when we have it. We stopped at Crazy Dave’s and picked up a pound of pulled pork to go. It was the worst barbeque we have ever had in our life. Maybe it was an off day for them or something but we would never go back. Mainely Meat with locations in Ellsworth and on Mt Desert Island has very good barbeque.

I don’t know what this other reviewer is talking about because I tried the ribs, beans, pulled pork and brisket which were all awesome. My friend lives in Ellsworth and I plan on stopping off at this place whenever I’m in town.

Maybe I’m just spoiled by my boyfriend’s seemingly natural talent for BBQ, but based on the size of the smoker«Crazy Dave» had along the side of the road my expectations were high and were not met in the slightest. In fact, the small BBQ/Smokehouse restaurant attached to the campground we stayed at in Bar Harbor was better than this place and they weren’t even the best I’ve had. Sure, everything was tender and just right, but there was a distinct lack of flavor. I did enjoy their baked beans, but they had an anise taste to them and contained sausage. I thought both the baked beans themselves and the sausage inside was really good and made me wish I had that instead of the pulled chicken, but some in our party wish they knew about before ordering as they don’t usually eat pork. All the pork products I did try were good, but the brisket was flavorless and needed a lot of sauce(which we added ourselves as we didn’t find either of their BBQ sauces good at all). As any good BBQ«artist» knows sauce is not what makes the meat, but the way you flavor and smoke it. If I was just rating the side dishes, including the amazingly light, fluffy and flavorful cornbread, I might have given them four stars, but factoring in the meat brings my rating down to three. Then why two? Well, as I got to the middle of my amazing cornbread, I found tons of long black hair baked inside. We had this at their roadside location in Bar Harbor(they also do pick-up and catering), but we had already gotten back on the road by the time I got to the cornbread and as we were already in Ellsworth there wasn’t much I could do. After that, I never finished my leftovers and even felt bad about giving them to our dog. I’m sure that was a freak occurrence, but I can’t shake it out of my head. Next time I’m in Bar Harbor and crave BBQ, I’m finding somewhere else to stop.
