My fiancée and me spent a lovely weekend at Barboursville in the Nebbiolo suite. It was small but very cozy and the perfect way to de-stress. We received a complimentary bottle of wine every day, a prepared breakfast we could heat up, and a cheeze and fruit plate, plus some rolls and preserves. A complimentary wine tasting at the vineyard wine store was also included. The staff was very friendly. We had a great time and recommend staying at the inn or cottages for a romantic getaway. We will definitely be back.

The grounds are beautiful and the accomodation is very comfortable and nicely furnished. The service however leaves much to be desired… at least for the time we were there. A cold breakfast of frozen quiche and, strangely enough, cooked sausages and bacon are left in the fridge for warming up! I would have paid for a freshly cooked breakfast. There were insufficient towels and cutlery for four as if nobody had bothered to check and the cups were a touch dirty ! All rather disconcerting. Perhaps it was bad day but truly does not bode well for a place that also houses the Palladio restaurant which was FABULOUS in every way.

The 1804 Inn is the inn at Barboursville Vineyards. It’s a nice place to stay if you’re spending the weekend exploring wineries in the area, or you could do what we did and stay one night after going to a tasting at Barboursville and eating at their restaurant, Palladio. It’s pricey, and there are definitely cheaper options in the area that are still perfectly nice, but the rooms here are quite large, and they have a lot of nice extra touches. Our suite was actually two rooms, with a fireplace in the main room, a bathroom with double sinks, a private garden, and a balcony that wrapped around the suite and overlooked the grounds and the ruins. We also received a complimentary bottle of wine, a free tasting at Barboursville, a fruit and cheese tray, as much water and assorted San Pellegrino as we wanted, internet access, and breakfast(fyi, great biscuits, bacon, and coffee). Considering all this, the prices, though high, are justified. I liked my stay here and found myself wishing that we were staying an extra night. If you’re looking for quiet and peaceful, this is it. My only complaint is the booking process. You can’t reserve a room online, which is pretty surprising since their web site is otherwise fully functional. To reserve a room you need to send them an email to find out which rooms are available on which weekends and then wait for someone to call you to confirm your reservation. Frankly it’s a pain and I don’t know why they don’t let you book online like everyone else in the world. This, along with the fact that, depending on the time of year, you’ll likely need to book a couple months in advance, is the only drawback.
