Heinen’s Grocery Store

if you are fortunate enough to have a Heinen’s in your area, you should be shopping there!
Every department in the store from deli, produce, meat, seafood, bakery is Top Notch.
If you like Beer, Wine and Liquor, you will love the experience. They have draft taps that rotate. I purchased a Bells Milchkaffee for $ 3 and enjoyed it while i shopped. Cheese, Crackers, Olive Bar, Salad Bar, samples galore. Please visit. You will not be disappointed.

Love this store, cheese section is great, Megan W and Sherry C are awesome and very helpful. Bryan M. One of the managers is also really helpful and they make it a great place to shop.

It’s very easy to not shop in Barrington if you roam the burbs and the city.
Heinen’s is silly expensive on most things, but has good selections of hard to find pricey things. I’d rather hunt them somewhere else any day that I have the time, but I’m a reluctant fan in a pinch.
Decent specialty meat counter. It’s all prepackaged but very freshish out of a central warehouse in Iowa? Way better than average veal chops, no offal. Not really a meat counter when you get down to it, a prepackaged Iowa distribution hub.
Uninspired fish department, overpriced and I get attitude from the fish ladies here like I get from street vendors in France, not appetizing and I’m pretty sure they can’t cook. When I ask for the dates and origin on the oysters I can’t tell if they just can’t process that specific a question or don’t understand it’s importance, but they don’t like questions, F them. Anyway the fish counter seems to be the dumping place for employees who don’t fit anywhere else, Beware. Decent emergency prepackaged oysters, also the most expensive in the burbs. Nothing is prepared fresh here either, go to Whole Foods for that, they still know how to break a fish down. At least you are getting your moneys worth there.
Nice wine selection, no deals but great selection.

Great store! Fresh, quality produce, seafood and meat. The wine selection and pricing is fantastic. The value is in the quality for what you pay.

This is a great place to come for a partially prepared dinner. They have a fantastic salad bar and they have a large display case of prepared dinner items. They also have items like prepared salmon where you just have to stick it in the oven to finish it.
Some of my favorite things to buy are these smoked salmon and cream cheese pinwheels to serve on top of a water cracker. SO GOOD. They also have a really good buffalo chicken dip that you just warm up and serve. Tasty!
The fruits and vegetables are fresh and high quality. My husband and I were quite surprised when we saw that they carried McConnell’s ice cream! We have enjoyed this while living in SoCal! I noticed Jeni’s, Grater’s and others.
The only thing that Heinen’s is missing is bulk food bins. I love buying a small amount of lentils, farro, or quinoa at Whole Foods (or Sprouts while I lived in CO and CA).

As grocery stores go, this is at the top of its class. Clean, well kept, easy to find food there. Salad bar has many great offerings. The deli and counter areas are loaded with good food and many options. Finally, the people working there are all friendly and helpful. They take ownership of their work and it shows.
It is a little more expensive than most of its competitors, but to me it’s worth the price. Just wish there was one closer to where I live,

Such a great grocery store ! Friendly employees, great environment and selection. Very fresh produce and meats, even have grass fed beef. Prices are a bit on the high side.

It is great. It is pricey. Not your Milwaukees Best and ramen noodles grocery store. Not going to find low end quality or low end pricing in this beautiful grocery experience but the service is old school, top-​notch, make it a fabulous shopping polka. Their different food, beverage, deli, and bakery stations are worth the trip and well worth the extra dime (or 30). My favorite is their pistachio muffins early on a Saturday morning but you can’t go wrong with anything they produce.

Really enjoy shopping here. They always have great fresh selections, wonderful produce. Not too crowded so you can take your time and «shop» Bakery is very good… but don’t miss the selection of fine cheeses! Yum!

Great grocery store, but limited selection. I especially like their bakery section. Their cookies are surprisingly good and are worth going back for. I don’t go here for groceries, but for their bakery goods.

Love their unique selection of meats, soups salads, wine and baked goods. Decent organic produce section. Good health food section too. Service is consistently SUPERB. On the rare occasion I’ve found a problem with something the manager goes out of the way to please you and is sincerely sorry and open to feedback. I would skip this place for cleaning products or personal supplies as the prices aren’t competitive and variety lacking. But everything else is awesome.

Heinen’s is something like a mix between Fresh Thyme, Whole Foods, Trader Joes, and Mariano’s. Kind of like a one-​stop-​shop for everything simple and gourmet in one place, jack-​of-​all trades but master of none. But oddly, this concept does seem to work as it really gives options for everyone even if it doesn’t seem to have a singular theme or personality.
The closest store to this I think is Fresh Thyme, but Heinen’s prices do seem to be a bit lower overall. It has much of the same selection of staples as Mariano’s, a relatively good generic brand like Trader Joes, but does carry rarer high end items like Whole Foods. The décor is very nice, with many attractively laid out displays, hardwood floors, and spacious layout. Everything is presented nicely, from the meat to the cheese displays to even the samples arranged nicely in covered domes.
Couple thoughts about some departments:
— The salad bar is huge and its presentation along with the soup station are so nice it would make many restaurants envious.
— Pastries presentation is great and the flavors are pretty good, but more along better grocery store quality rather than something you’d find in Panera.
— Breads have a nice texture to them and pretty good flavor. Very good for a grocery store.
— Produce selection is varied with some less common items, like Mariano’s. Prices for these can be very competitive to very pricey so choose wisely.
— Great selection of finer teas at good prices. In particular there’s Tea Forte and Republic of Tea options you probably haven’t seen at other higher end stores.
— Coffee selection could use some help — I would have preferred more choice of whole beans and less instant coffee /​k-​cups.
— Very nice selection of gourmet ice cream from around the US, in particular Graeter’s in Ohio, Two Brothers in California, Jeni’s from Ohio, and Kimmer’s from Illinois. Between here and Mariano’s, you can save yourself quite a bit of travel for these delicious treats.
— Good selection of beer, I didn’t notice any extremely rare items but the mix of domestic, international, and local craft beers is plenty for any event. They also have a great selection of higher end spirits at prices very competitive to Binny’s. Once again, I didn’t notice any very rare items but the selection is impressive for a grocery store.
Overall, this place is great if you’re looking for rare food items, want a very pleasant grocery store to walk around, or want to try a wide variety of cheaper and gourmet foods. The prices can be high for some items but if you stick to the sales and bulk purchases, this can also be one of the cheapest stores to shop at for high quality food. I’ll definitely be back soon.

High End + Quality + Pricey = Heinen’s
We came here after eating a burger at a local place nearby. We noticed Heinen’s was in the area and that they looked like a nice local grocery store.
Heinen’s is a high end grocery store for this Barrington community to choose from. Since we had just ate lunch we had full stomachs and didn’t just start grabbing impulse items. This was good because like Dorothy P. mentioned in her review the stuff here is a little more expensive than other grocery stores and that it could potentially damage a household budget if you aren’t being careful and impulsive.
We did look up and down the isles and they do have some quality and hard to find items. I was able to find some semolina flour that I haven’t been able to find at any other grocery store. They have unique stations or sections like other stores for specialty items just scaled down a bit. Heinen’s is a scaled down version of a Mariano’s but just more focused on attention to details. This is a good thing because when you get too big you tend to lose attention to those details.
Will we be back? The answer is yes if we are in the area to check them out more thoroughly for those hard to find items that other stores don’t have and to keep looking for unique items. Definitely a nice high end grocery store for Barrington.

* — Always eat a meal and fill up before you go grocery shopping. This applies for all grocery stores.
* — Scope out the isles ahead of time to look for those hard to find items.
* — Bring your money and shop wisely.

Heinen’s is my happy place.
Wonderful produce, broad organic selection (always love to see more!), friendly staff and service. However, the prepared food counter takes the cake! Some of their entrees are better than home-​cooked. And I’m a pretty good cook! You’ll pay more for the convenience, but when you don’t have the time or energy to whip together a meal this is a great alternative.
You can count on healthy options including chicken, fish and green veggies. Don’t miss the orzo salad, sweet mashers, Parmesan-​crusted orange roughy, and seasoned salmon. I’m so thankful Heinen’s is only 5 minutes away!

We made a stop here on the way home from a day of being at the chain o’ lakes. We had really worked up an appetite and we had a craving for steak. Since we are not from the Midwest, we asked my sister who lives in Chicagoland where’s a good spot to get some steaks to bring home to cook. She suggested this place as she considered it a «nicer» grocery store.
We arrived at 7pm on a Sunday evening and it seemed as though we were the only customers in the store. While looking through the produce, we were asked multiple times by staff if we needed help with anything or had any questions. Once we got to the meat section, the meat guy was like, «I’ll answer all your questions about meat!» We liked their steak selection and we picked up some HUGE shrimp for a surf and turf meal.
Their wine selection was on display near the front of the store. Pretty hard to miss and they had vast collection to choose from. In their aisles, the shelves were kept very neat and all product labels were facing forward. The store was very clean and was easy to find our way around.
Pricing overall is a bit more than average grocery prices but they definitely did not skimp on quality. I’d definitely consider coming back if I’m ever in the area again.

How the heck did we just spend almost $ 150 on random things at a grocery store?! Heinen’s that’s how. The hubs and I decided that we needed a few snacks and fruit for the week, since we made it a goal to try to make meals from what we have in the pantry before they became meatcicles and the like. We have been to Heinen’s before but never really cruised the aisles.
Rookie mistake: don’t come to this place without a definite list, unless you just so happen to have a ton of money to blow.
We made our second mistake when we cruised up and down every aisle instead of just sticking to the perimeter (oops)…at least we didn’t come with empty stomachs. Heinen’s has a variety of conventional fare (the stuff you’d see at your local Jewel or Mariano’s) as well as some gourmet items and imports. I noticed that you really have to be conscious of the prices, since many of the items we saw where less expensive elsewhere. The exception to this was organic eggs, which were AT LEAST a dollar less at Heinen’s than anywhere else that we’ve shopped. Needless to say we stocked up.
I’m still suffering from a massive bruise to my wallet, but at least I’ve got a bunch of eggs and various other food items I didn’t even know I needed. While I might forgo a leisurely stroll up and down every aisle, I’ll definitely be back for the eggs.

This moved in after I moved and my boyfriend and I just checked it out. He and I expected it to be a Mariano’s/Whole Foods hybrid, and I was pleasantly surprised.
We’d tried to check it out on labor day, but they were closed (the guy who checked me out mentioned that they close on major holidays — which is nice for employees). The ambiance and environment was very nice, and I immediately noticed in the produce section the different organic food displays (it was all very well marked and easy to tell what was what, unlike Jewel). Yes, some of the ‘short-​cut’ veggie trays look the same, it’s a black styrofoam and plastic wrap, it’s not that uncommon.
I did find a number of interesting and novel products in the meat department — my boyfriend commented that he’d never seen such a big Mahi Mahi (it was the whole half a fish, not a small fillet), and they had yellowfin tuna as well. I was impressed with their selection of meats, and some of other specialty items (I’ve been looking for avocado oil for EVER. They are the first place to have it.) I also like that they have their line of store brands as Heinens’ — no trying to hide what it is or pretend it is a private brand. They own that it is their brand and are product of their products. When I was there, I only bought some lip balm, an apple, and a couple wedges of cheese that I was able to sample in the store. I can’t wait to be back and buy more!
As for their prices, I had been at Jewel earlier that day, and compared the prices of the items from Jewel with the same items (same brands) at Heinens, and they were either the same at Heinens, .10 cheaper, or like .5 more. Honestly, a shopping trip would have been roughly the same price for me. It would have all evened out.

Eat your heart out, friends. This is the best food store to hit Barrington. I bet Jewel is shaking in it’s boots. They have quite a great selection of food, and the displays are just beautiful. My favorite section is the deli. You could go there for every meal because they have all these delicious ready-​made entrees.
The aisles are full of off-​beat brands and gourmet food items that will tempt you to buy them. They were giving out samples of this new pasta sauce I had never heard of. They told me it was made in the Chicago area, and the brand was a family start-​up company. How cool is that? Way to support local small businesses Heinen’s!
I also have to give a shout out to their liquor section. I just love a unique bottle of wine or a good craft beer. They have plenty to choose from. The staff is so knowledgeable, I was asking them nerdy questions about the wines, and they were giving me great answers back. I walked out with 3 bottles that I had never tried. Based on what I told the store clerk about my tastes, he recommended 3 perfect bottles for me. I am so impressed.
I like to try new recipes that call for ingredients that are sometimes hard to find. Heinen’s always seems to have everything on my shopping list. Including fresh produce. You name it, they have pea shoots to leeche nuts.
The meat section offers fresh and unique meats such as organic chicken bratwurst. The fish seems to be the freshest of any grocery store I’ve been to. You can even special-​order something if you have a recipe that calls for a protein that they don’t have in-​stock. Pretty awesome.
I hope Heinen’s opens in ever deserted Dominick’s store in the area. That would make the suburbs superb.

I kinda love it.
I came here expecting to see a clone of Whole Foods, Wegman’s, or Mariano’s. But I was pleasantly surprised. HUGE produce section, even featuring fruits and veggies I had never heard of. Satellite peaches? I have to have those! Very impressive salad bar, and they even let you sample them! The allergen notices for each prepared salad is greatly appreciated. I recommend the antipasto salad, it is delicious! I was also surprised that this store sells duck bacon, which I had never heard of before. But at $ 13 a package, this is something that I will have to buy next time. I loved the natural foods section, which featured my favorite treats, including Hail Merry tarts and macaroons, kale chips, and Live Soda kombucha. Free samples abound all over the store for cheese, coffee, wine, beer, and produce. Unlike Whole Foods, there is also conventional groceries here, such as Oreo cookies and Campbell’s soup. And the staff is incredibly patient and helpful.
Also…don’t laugh (okay, fine, laugh)…I liked the bathrooms. Each stall in the ladies room is like being in a private room. And they’re clean (at least they were when I was there).
I dig it. I’m looking forward to returning to fulfill my high-​end desires!

This is the first of the Heinen’s Fine foods to show up in Illinois. I equate it to a larger formatted Fresh Market.
The salad bar is killer! That is the reason I go. They have tons of different options and it is all for $ 5.95/lb. Meats are high end and have a great assortment of prepared meals that are either all ready to eat or heat at home.
