Good deli and great assortment of chips and other snack foods to pick up. Generally a nice looking store — good atmosphere. We enjoyed sitting at one of the tables with coffee and a cupcake for a break before driving into Pennsylvania

The River Market is great — the ideal local store. We love knowing that any missing ingredient we need is only 5 mins away from our home. The new ownership has elevated the store into that which offers not only basics but a variety of specialty products. The staff are welcoming and helpful. We’ll definitely continue to be loyal customers of the market as long as we are in the area.

I love this market!!! The produce is the freshest that I have had in years. The best part is that they carry everything including any last minute supplies that you might have forgotten on your way out the door. The owners are super super sweet and warm and welcoming. A definite gem!

Since the new owners took control, the place has gone abruptly downhill. It’s disgraceful that they can’t even leave lids for coffee cups out. They have sold me outdated milk! The old staff was forced out, they were the heart and soul of the river market. New ownership is SOTERRIBLYRUDE!

My favorite thing about this store was the free Wi-Fi! Barryville has zero cell reception, so it was nice to shoot off a few texts while in this store. Additionally, it was very clean and organized inside. The bakery items in the front looked especially delicious, although I didn’t try any of them. The downside was that we went semi-close to closing time and the deli/meat area was already closed down. This meant that there was basically no real food left for us to buy. Considering there is basically nothing else in the area, this place was decent, but if it had any competition at all, maybe it would have to do some additional work and serve their customers a little bit closer towards closing time. This was a disappointment.

A terrific deli — in many ways: 1) Free Wi-Fi in an area where there is absolutely NO cell service 2) Clean and neat all around 3) Terrific breakfast sandwiches — and they even toast the rolls! 4) Staff is friendly and helpful 5) Coffee is good and strong 6) Fresh baked pastries, muffins and breads 6) The place is full of everything else you forgot to bring with you!

what an amazingly pleasant deli, they have anything, and everything you need. They have great coffee they refer to as MUD. They’re bakery is also delicious, they have great selections of beer, and sodas. When I asked if there’s a Starbucks around, or a dunkin donuts they did make a little fun of me but this place gets 5 stars because, we spent every day or twice a day buying essentials.

I really enjoyed this place. Their corn salsa is incredible. Their sandwiches were decent(I guess above average for the location). The store itself has a ton of good snacks and goods.

cute and convenient. A little over priced, and the produce could be more extensive, but I shop here all the time. Also great antiques upstairs.

River Market anchors Barryville, gives it a commercial center, provides desserts and deli meats, and generally makes this town a liveable place to be. The coffee is always above average, and the muffins are also great. The video store here closed last year and has been reconfigured into a little antiques market. Probably a smart move. Definitely a better use of the space. I don’t really understand Jessica F’s comments about the owners’ sexuality. It’s totally irrelevant. What matters here is that River Market is a little gem on a strip of scenic Rte. 97 that shines as the only bright spot between Port Jervis and Narrowsburg.

i love love love this general store! where else can you get a poncho, a shotgun-shaped lighter, flavor blasted pizza goldfish, water shoes, and a pulled pork sandwich? all at a reasonable price? i dare you to show me where else in the vicinity this can occur. this is a great one-stop shop for everything you need or want while camping & rafting. there’s also a decent ice cream shop attached. not fabulous, but when you’re hot and hungry for ice cream, it works!

Just got back from a weekend at Kittatinny Campgrounds and stopped here everyday. They really have everything you need for a weekend of camping and rafting. Although the biggest drawback is their lack of selection. I got a pulled pork sandwich both on Saturday and Sunday so I must have liked it, although it wasn’t very flavorful. I think I just liked the idea of getting a pulled pork sandwich while camping. Also, I got a black and white milkshake from the ice cream shop and was not exactly impressed as it was very thin. Everyone at the store was extremely nice and helpful, so that was a plus.

Neat, friendly, cute, and convenient. We came in for aloe(which was a bit pricey since only one brand was available, but it was desperately needed for a sunburn) and found it! They also have a gas station and ice cream shop where I tasted the most delicious chocolate covered frozen banana!

Everything about the River Market screams upscale. To understand why that is important to lead with, you have to understand what it replaced, who lives here, who vacations here, and most importantly, who is moving here. A few years ago, there was a dumpy, ratty general store called Oelker’s. Empty produce cartons were torn apart and thrown down on the floor when it rained. Jerky was sold out of glass jars on the counter. You couldn’t see your hand in front of your face in there, and when you looked for staples, your choices were pretty grim: Welch’s Grape Jelly. Dinty Moore beef stew. Hamburger Helper. There was usually a crock pot of something recently killed bubbling in the back, and if you asked, they would usually give you a taste. The nicest thing about this place is that they outletted Beach Lake Bread, artisanal bread made across the Delaware in Beach Lake, PA. Very good bread. They sold a lot of domestic beer by the case to people camping at Kittatinny Campgrounds down the road, and to locals. They sold night crawlers. A gay couple moved in to town, as many gay couples were. This didn’t really raise many eyebrows in this small town. Until they bought Oelker’s, and renovated it. The refrigerator cases were framed out in mahogany. They put in a meat counter selling handmade sausage, charcuterie and delicatessen, where a sandwich set you back about $ 8. They continued outletting Beach Lake Bread, and found other local purveyors of local products to augment their baked goods. They began their own line of sauces, salsas and condiments to complement the line of Stonewall Kitchens stuff they carried. They began carrying Burt’s Bees products. You could see inside the store. Then they bought out the video store across the street, dumped most of the videos, stocked DVDs, and began renting those. They also laid in a supply of upscale camping supplies, gourmet candies and River Market branded clothing. Did I mention they carry their own brand of candle called«Glow by River Market»? These give Diptyque a run for their money. Overall, this is the place – really the only place – in the entire area to go to buy mesquite chips, blueberry-mango salsa, a water pistol, rent«About Schmidt» and buy some hanger steaks for the Wolf grill. Locals now carry cases of domestic beer to the counter staggering not from the weight, but from shock from the enormously high price. Some leave. The new people come in and are thrilled because it’s like a little Dean and DeLuca in the country. What I am not sure of is why Manhattanites want a house in the country if they want to be near Dean and DeLuca. This is the struggle. How to reconcile an influx of new people who can’t live without the New York Times every day with an existing community of people who just want to know when trout fishing season opens. Somehow, River Market manages to be upscale and of the people at the same time, celebrating the local region and embracing all cultural and outdoor events, serving as a locus for further development of the area. They reworked the old video store mentioned previously into the Barryville Visitor’s Center, started a Chamber of Commerce and have worked hard to create some kind of downtown feel in this weirdly configured town with no real gathering place. I kind of understand why locals resent paying top dollar for a case of Budweiser, but I like being able to find venison chops five minutes from my house.
