My wife and I visited for the first time and we were very happy with our experience. The woman working the front counter was very pleasant and helpful. She took the time to explain many of the unfamiliar Salvadorian dishes. We followed her recommendation of the pork papusas which were absolutely delicious. We also tried the empanadas, which are made of fried plantains as opposed to the bread typically found in Mexican fare. They come either filled with custard, or oddly, refried black beans. We tried some of each, and surprisingly mutually agreed that we preferred the one made with beans. It is very refreshing to be able to try some Latin food other than Mexican, especially in Barstow. All in all we throughly enjoyed every aspect of our visit and will definitely return.

Yes, you’re driving down the right road. No, it’s not someone’s house(Kevin P was a little nervous about this). Yes, that is indeed a B Health rating on the window. Don’t worry, I’m sure your kitchen wouldn’t even pass the rigorous state inspections, so let’s not get all righteous. If you find yourself in Barstow(my apologies) you need to consider Café Las Pupusas. This is what Unilocal is all about; finding diamonds in the rough, local gems hidden away in a forgotten town. If it wasn’t for Unilocal we would have never known about Café Las Pupusas — much gratitude to my fellow Unilocalers that took time to write about this place. Inside is a modest restaurant with half a dozen tables. There’s a small menu on the wall to the left of the register, as well as a specials sign on the counter. The younger(I’m assuming daughter) helped us through the menu and daily offerings. Her mother(again, I’m assuming here) spoke little English but was still very friendly. A variety of items were ordered. All day in the desert certainly racks up the hunger. We ordered three types of a pupasas, Pozole Verde, a chicken tamal, and torta. Even with chips and salsa, we consumed it all. It was quite tasty and something Barstow is lucky to have in its little town. The pupasas are definitely the star of the show. Warm, cheesy and filling — these suckers are carb Heaven! The Pozole Verde, while warm and satisfying on this freezing cold evening, it lacked a bit of flavor found in red pozole. I prefer pork over chicken as well. Service was fantastic. They made you feel like you’re right at home. It’s not fancy by any means, but you’ll be treated right. At one point they were out of ice and offered to run to the store to grab some more. Given that it was freezing outside and the fountain drinks were plenty cold we were more than okay. But the offer was genuine and well appreciated. If you’re in the area definitely make your way to this tiny little eatery. The train-yard view was even pleasing!
