El Mirage is 24,000 acres of not very regulated land. The lake bed is used for land speed tests, film sets, and Shia LaBeouf’s really weird Vanity Fair photoshoot where he dresses like an astronaut and throws water on a mermaid. Cars have gone over 300 mph on this lake. People come in buggies, ATVs, dirt bikes, hot rods, and 4×4 SUVs and trucks. Some people go kite skating. There can be aircraft, too. It’s often dry, but it can be muddy in the winter months. Families with kids tend to stay near the main drag and there are vault toilets and shaded areas here and there. Fees are $ 15/day, $ 30/week, or $ 90/year per vehicle. The only speed limit is 15 mph near campsites. It kind of makes you an asshole to do 150 past someone’s tent, you know? No fireworks, no glass containers for any reason, and no shooting. Green sticker vehicles and helmets required. No drinking and driving. Don’t litter. Don’t mess with the wildlife. Those are the rules. Here’s a little Smoking Tire at El Mirage:
