PREFACE I bought a kid’s bike there a few years ago and had a good experience. I was looking forward to more of the same, but it was not to be. I recently visited with the intention of buying a specific brand and model for an adult, but because they did not have it in stock was instead shown a different brand AND style, and was rather dismissively told«they’re all the same… they all come off the same assembly line in Taiwan.»(That is a direct quote from the teenage-looking girl who«helped» us.) I believe that because the purchase was not near the four-figure level that perhaps they felt the effort to help(e.g., get the brand/model I was interested in) wasn’t worth the profit margin on an entry-level product. At least that’s the way it felt. At least they weren’t outright rude like one of their competitors. This was a sale that was pretty much theirs to lose. And they did.

I’ve been cycling for 30 years, used to race road and half Iron tris, and have seen my share of snooty racing shops that have poor customer service. This place is just great. I brought an old schwinn in for service and bought some tubes for my in-laws’ clunkers and they could not have been nicer or more attentive. Obviously they could also talk carbon fiber frames all day as well. I live in Los Angeles but would kill to have a shop like this near me.

I have gone to these guys a few times over the past 10 plus years for both minor maintenance & repairs on my bikes.(That’s bikes plural — I have several bikes). And to buy some gear… It’s a smaller shop — which I prefer, all the stuff is quality in there. The owner Greg, is a super nice guy and knowledgeable, and has a lot of good recommendations on local rides etc…(even though I know most of them, but if you’re a tourist or new to the area this is a great local bike shop to start a history with.) I love my bikes and only let certain people work on them. If I don’t get the right feel about a place or somebody’s competency, they don’t get to touch my bikes. These guys will treat your bike like it was their own, they actually care about the work they’re putting into it. So there ya’ go.

I am not an expert cyclist but my parents bought me a bike from Liberty Cycle ten to 15 years ago when I was in middle school. I now live in Hoboken and decided to dust my bike off since it was the easiest way to get around. I am unsure if this is a standard in the industry but when I called Liberty Cycle to find out about getting a tune up they said it was free because I purchased the bike there.

Why is Liberty Cycle great? Yes, they have great bikes. Yes, they’re nice guys. But what they do better than anyone is community. If you’re new to the area and a cyclist this is the place to go. Their club has 150+ members with a few regular weekly rides. It’s the Liberty Cycle family, and there’s always another seat at the table open for you. Just looking for something to bounce around on with the kids? They’ve got that covered too. Give them a shot. I’m pretty sure you’ll like them.

Hi just bought an old bike from them to use for 2 weeks while i’m here in NYC, they will buy it back when i leave. Seems a decent deal. Staff in the shop are kind and friendly also very flexible. Maybe because we are all latin somehow. Will see if the bike survive my heavy biking in town.

Sorry to hear about the previous reviewer’s bad experience. Mine was very different. I recently moved to the area and have found Greg, Paul, and the rest of the staff to be very welcoming and helpful with service on my road bike and joining their group rides on Saturdays and Sundays. They gave me a great deal on a Kid’s mountain-bike which my 8 year-old son just loves.

If you’re not a pro cycler, don’t bother wih this place. I’d heard a lot of good things about it, but when I went with the intention of buying a new cycle, I was not happy at all. I felt I was«sized-up» and it was decided I wasn’t a serious rider or buyer. I did go to nearby High Gear, and purchased my $ 3000 cycle there. I returned, and purchased my son’s BMX cycle there for Christmas. My son went to Liberty to donate his old bike for Christmas, and was later sorry. He got a quick thanks, and it was put outside in the rain with the others. Glad the owner was just recognized as a top racer in his age group. Priorities.
