Schmidt Bakery

Found this little gem by talking to the owner one morning by chance while having breakfast at a local diner. He invited me to see the bakery before I resumed my trip to NC. I’m stopping by again on my way south especially to get Christmas cookies and fruitcake like my German grandma baked. The best baked memories ever!

Now I am certainly biased because I have worked here for three plus years, but it has caused me to be picky about other bakeries because their stuff is just so good!
Much better than chain baked good that you find at Starbucks or Panera because Schmidt’s bakes fresh every day. Dunkin’ can’t say that.
My personal favorites are a white cake with sprinkles, a classic glazed donuts, and they have delicious fudge brownies that are typically not seen.
Breads are great too, go for vienna and if you’re in around the holidays try some butterbit dinner rolls! I used to eat them plain while working!
Finally if you go President’s Day weekend you are in for the best cherry fritter of your life. Only sold once a year this cherry glazed cherry fritter is served hot! Over 34,000 sold in just one weekend last year.
