Rivers spiders and destroyers The Doubling Point River Lighthouse was built back in 1898 and was one of the several little lighthouses built along the Kennebec River. The great Bath Iron Works that has built a whole lot of ships over the years and still builds the navy’s aegis destroyers stand only a little over a mile away from the lighthouse. The lighthouse was constructed only about 15 years after the Iron Works started building ships and was needed so the many ships could negotiate the nasty bend in the river that occurs here. Some swift currants, fog and frequently storms made the lighthouse useful indeed. The 23 foot tall light was automated in 1988 but still serves as an active aid to navigation. It is actually on private land and isn’t easy to find but well worth the effort. It was restored and fixed up around 1999 and is a lovely little light that gives great views of the Kennebec and the looming Bath Iron Works. Fortunately the generous owner of the property lets people come and visit the cool little lighthouse as long as they are respect and quiet. It was fun to walk along the short pier out to the little lighthouse but when we got there we found the whole light to be infested with webs and some nasty looking spiders. Fortunately I saw them before I ended up walking into the webs. Doubling is a cool little river light that still serves to help the numerous ships make it around this treacherous bend in the river. A fun place to visit. Just make sure you are quiet, respectful and very, very careful around those spiders.
