So on the web Googled up a company named«Budget Auto Glass» that’s supposedly located on Florida Blvd. The phone was answered by a machine that immediately said«this call may be monitored for quality assurance» and then forwarded it to what I thought then was a ringing extension at a brick and mortar busisness. At first I was very impressed. I was calling around for prices late in the day to replace a broken windshield and most places were closed. Three or four answered, and this one was one of them. The owner, Richard, quoted me a price for a replacement that was about $ 50 more than the best price I’d gotten up to that point so I was appreciative but doubtful I’d use them. I thanked him and thought that was that. About half an hour later, I got a call… it was Richard and he was hungry for work. He offered to match the price that I was given; do a home /mobile installation at no additional cost; and touted that his installers all had 15 to 20 years experience and that they’d even get the inspection sticker off my old windshield(something he said other companies couldn’t or wouldn’t do). I thought, WOW this guy is obviously a small businessman in Baton Rouge who is MOTIVATED! What a great deal; what motivation! Yeah, what the heck! Anybody that confident and willing to call and make a deal at 7:00PM is motivated and must be good! Next morning comes and my wife is home with the car. The installer showed up on time WITHHISGIRLFRIEND who he said«was his GPS.» According to my wife the installation went pretty much OK, but at the end the girlfriend came to the door and said the inspection sticker hadn’t survived the installation. We got a printed receipt from«Novus Star Windshield» that had a telephone number on it I didn’t recognize. On calling it I got an answering machine that said«Allstates Windshield» Googling the telephone number yielded another company, «United Glass Replacement and Repair.» So, here’s the thing. I learned all of this AFTER the fact. All four companies are basically internet storefronts for a mobile glass repair company that uses independent contractors. Every phone number for each business forwards to Richard. Why am I telling this story??? I called Richard in the afternoon when I got home and got an answering machine. He called me back and I said«I thought you said your guys all had 15 to 20 years experience, were very professional and would get the sticker off my windshield? My wife said he didn’t look old enough to have that much experience and my sticker got destroyed.» He IMMEDIATELYTOOKTHEOFFENSIVE! He said, well«What’s the problem? I gave you a premium product at a discounted price! Is there any problem? Are you having a bad day? It sounds like you’re having a bad day.» I said, «Well you said you’d send an experienced guy and save the sticker so I wouldn’t have to deal with getting a new one.» THATWASONEOFHISBIGSELLINGPOINTSINHISPITCHTHENIGHTBEFORE. He said, «Well these stickers are designed to destroy themselves when you take them off! They don’t come off.» «But you said you’d take it off. You didn’t say it was difficult. You didn’t imply a degree of difficulty last night?» THENHESAID… «What’s the deal, AREYOUTOPOORTOAFFORD $ 20FOR A NEWSTICKER?» I told him«Go ____yourself,» and hung up the phone. Now we have to pray that it doesn’t leak and what we would have saved if he had done what he said is eaten up by the lack of skill of his installer. Am I too poor to afford $ 20 for a new sticker? What kind of businessman says that instead of, «I’m really sorry that happened.» What kind of businessman says, «We’ll not only match the price and save that sticker and thereby save you more money!» then gets upset when his customer calls to legitimately and politely inquire /complain? What kind of businessman has 4 different business names, three different telephone numbers, and acts like a brick and mortar shop when he apparently isn’t. Bad businessmen.
